This 2 piece dress seems to be really old but I can not tell when it was made. All fasteners are metal (hooks and zippers) and there is some hand stitching and no surging whatsoever. The top and bottom are both lined and the whole thing definitely has some weight to it. The label is embroidered and i THINK says "Velia Gebbia" "34 Vittorio Veneto" "Roma". I have searched and searched and can't find anything about this designer. Anyone familiar with it?

I am not familiar with the label but since it says Roma I am assuming it is an Italian designer. Sometimes when I have a label from another country I go to their google page and search the words, then I use Babel Fish to translate the pages that come up. It's a process and I don't always find anything but it is worth a try. The dress looks like a linen/rayon blend 1950s.

THere is very little written or known about Italian designers and couturiers other than the few that gained international status like Pucci, Veneziana, Fontana etc. I bet this label is of one of the small couturiers who had a regular clientele, and the dress probably came over with a woman who immigrated. I have run across some great Italian clothes that came over with immigrants.

What Jonathan said - also, the tag looks to me like it might be an upmarket dressmaker (the fact that it has the address as well as the phone number). Many good dressmakers - especially then - had very good skills and designed as well.

I tried googling the address - to no avail.

well thanks to both of you. all of that information is actually a really big help! I may just work that into the description somehow, so people understand why they don't know who it is. or is that kind of pointless?

I did some research on the street name. My husband and I went to Rome and several other cities in Italy for our honeymoon so I made sure I figured out where the good shopping is.

I checked my guide book and Vittorio Veneto is between Via Veneto and Villa Borghese, in the area of the Spanish Steps which is where all of the high end boutiques are.

This could support Nicole's theory.
