I note that VFG has asked if anyone has information regarding Carnegie of London. I worked for this company for 3 years in the 1980's, along with my sister Helen, who worked there for around 11 years also. the company closed in 1984. It was based in Osborn Street in Aldgate in London. My sister was a designer there, in the 1st floor design studio, and I worked alongside her in the design studio as a sample machinist. The company made the samples and manufactured the first off the peg range for David and Elizabeth Emmanuel after Princess Diana's wedding. Am happy to answer any questions re this company, have many photos too of life in the studio there! Were very happy days.

Hi Nicki,
It's always great to hear from someone who has first hand experience with one of the brands we may have handled. For myself I have often been drawn to a decadantly embellished 60's cocktail dress, to find it held the Carnegie label. They seem to have produced high quality garments.
Was your sister designing in the 11 years prior to it's closure? you never know, one of our members may have a garment designed by her!
It's interesting to know that as well as producing their own garments Carnegie also manufactured for other labels, was this only towards the end of their business or throughout do you know?

I hope Nicki comes back with more information and photographs of the studio. I'm really eager to hear more, as I can't find any information on the Carnegie of London label. As Melanie says, their clothing was always very good quality.
