But test a real easy trick for when you're in the wild is to rub it on a piece of clothing to create some heat and then smell it for a chemical sort of formaldehyde smell.

Celluloid doesn't always smell but when it does it's more like camphor or vinegar. I thought I had those earrings but I don't - but I have some that are similar. I agree with Cin that they are Celluloid. Celluloid is much lighter than Bakelite. Bakelite makes a distinctive clack when you bang it against something else that is Bakelite.
