Chanel suit?

Hello,

I found what says is a Chanel suit at a local thrift shop today but was hoping for some verification. The tag inside the jacket says the following:

CHANEL (white label with black text)

MADE IN FRANCE
FABRIQUE EN FRANCE
03P
P20836V12071
M1808 40

COMPOSITION
50% coton - cotton
32% laine - wool
18% nylon - nylon

doublure veste/jacket lining
95% soie - silk
5% elasthanne - spandex

doublure jupe/skirt lining
100% soie - silk

I can post photos if that would help. It does have the chain around the base of the jacket and the construction of both the jacket and the skirt is very well done.

Thanks for any feedback I may get!

I gather that the P in P20836V12071 means Printemps and the 71 means 1971 but my searches on google have come back with not a whole lot.

Keeks, something like a Chanel suit can't be authenticated in this manner - your best bet is to take it to a professional who can handle the garments, look at the relevant details and give you their opinion. Fakes are very good these days, I'm sure you can appreciate.

My feeling is that if it is from 1971 (and you'll need to post images for starters for us to provide much of an idea) it's probably going to be genuine as fakes weren't being made back then. Not to say that labels couldn't have been faked or added - this is why you need an expert opinion.

The detailed fabric composition label suggests it won't be that old though.

Hi Nicole,
Thanks for the response! One some other threads I believe it was you who said that Chanel suits are made it pieces to be easily altered. This jacket's sleeves have been made in 3 pieces and the rest of the jacket seems to have 9 panels, both in the exterior fabric as well as the interior silk lining.
Would you perhaps know of a location in Canada (more specifically Ottawa, Montreal or Toronto) that would be able to authenticate? I also saw on another thread that taking it to the distributor (in this case Holt Renfrew) doesn't necessarily yield results.
Thanks again Nicole,
Keeks

I'm not sure about this, but I think its the 03P that is the date - 2003 - spring. Its not 1971 - that isn't what the Chanel suits looked like then. I have one up for sale on etsy which is early 70s. I don't know if Ottawa has a Chanel store, but Toronto and Montreal have Chanel stores - call them and ask, however, the last time I called about having an item authenticated was 8 years ago and they told me then they wouldn't do it. I'm not an expert by any means, but your suit looks 100% aok to me. That was a bit of luck finding it at a thrift store - it must have been from an estate clean-out.

Thanks Jonathan for the feedback! It being 2003 launch makes it easier for me to search as I was unable to find anything close to it from 1971. I'll give a call to the store in Montreal and see what they can do. It was weird flipping through the racks and coming across this suit. It seemed pretty well made and even if it isn't genuine, I'm pretty lucky for the find.

Thank you for the pics - I agree with the others, it's likely to be modern and genuine. Well done! I still think you're best to take it to an expert but from the information you've provided, it's looking good.

Thanks Nicole! It will be placed carefully in my closet for now (until I lose a few pounds...). Any idea on an approximate value if it is authentic? I appreciate everyone's feedback!
