This hat has a label of Chapeaux Original.
It is also marked on the inside Brigitte Body Made in Italy.
Any help greatly appreciated. I see similar also marked Christian Dior.
Is this the brand of this company? Time period.
Thank you. Sandy

Sandy,

I have seen quite few hats with that label or similar over the years, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s. Both Chapeau Original and Chapeaux Original, or sometimes it says Chapeau Originals. Subtle differences in the lettering on each. I have never researched the actual maker of the hats with those labels. It is not connected with Christian Dior.

Time period is 1960s. Possibly very late 1950s, but I am leaning to the 1960s. Looks like a hat made for the conservative woman.

Beverly is just the trade name of the type of novelty fur felt from which the hat was made. It is not the hat maker. The importer of the felt body is unknown to us without further research. So here is how it worked: The felt body was made in Italy, imported here by whoever, then given that "Beverly" name by the millinery wholesaler of the felt body (could be the importer or not), and then the body (with the Beverly stamp already inside) was purchased by a hat manufacturer who then blocked, and trimmed the finished hat as we see it now, and then it got the last step...adding the Chapeaux Original label. The hat's maker could be 1 of over 100 or more different hat makers from the 1960s time period.

If you want to dig around on Google for anything further, that information won't add anything to the hat's value to a collector, but it is fun to dig.

Thank you. Why I asked here. I see several hats online with this label or script and name with Christian Dior also on the label.

I searched online for information about Chapeaux Original and Dior and all of the hits were for hats that have a label that says "Christian Dior Chapeaux." The text that accompanied the sundry auctions usually said "Christian Dior Chapeaux original design.' From that I think we can conclude that the Dior label meant "Christian Dior chapeaux (i.e., Christian Dior hat)" and an original design by Dior, which is not the same as your Chapeaux Original label or brand.

Did you find any Dior hats that have both labels in them? Or that say Dior and Chapeaux Original?

As I said above, the label has nothing at all to do with Christian Dior. The term, or a variety of it, has been used on hat labels by a variety of hat makers since the 1920's. It was used long before Dior was even designing. So forget about trying to link them together. Searching for a link is a waste of time.

I have to disagree that we can conclude that the Dior label "Christian Dior Chapeaux" meant an original design by Dior. But that is another subject.

Chapeaux, by the way, is the plural...hats (not hat). So the label on your hat is an odd translation to me "Hats Original".

I didn't mean to affirm the Christian Dior Chapeaux label meant it was an original design by Dior. I meant that that was what the sellers were saying in the auction text:

--"Vintage Christian Dior Chapeaux original"
-- "VINTAGE - CHRISTIAN DIOR CHAPEAUX ORIGINAL DESIGN"
-- "Vintage Christian Dior Chapeaux original straw hat..."

and that that could be what was causing the confusion.

Lynne,

I did not mean to infer that you were wasting time, we all recognize your outstanding abilities in researching on- line information. :) I was referring to FooFoo spending too much time surfing around trying to get further information.

Why I asked here.

I apologize as I do not think I was clear. I was in no way second guessing the hat lady Barbara. You know your hats. I do not.

You told me to dig around. I had already dug around and how I found the info to ask the ? I was not implying the hat was made by Dior. I just thought the scripts looked similar.

I appreciate both you ladies taking the time to help me. It is a lovely hat.

Sandy,

I get the sense from your above comments that I somehow put you off in some way, and if so I do apologize. I do not feel you were second guessing me at all. And if you did second guess me, that is just fine, as no one is an expert who knows everything (I sure do not). I learned from you and your question as well! Second guessing can be fun and informative, and a way to exchange ideas and learn.

I did think you were asking if the hat could have been made by Dior or had some connection to Dior. Your comments as written in your first post were a bit unclear to me.

I look forward to seeing more of your hats and hope to be able to help you or learn from you. :hiya:

All good. I adore hats and adore the fact you have studied and become an expert more than anyone else I know.
They just followed me home and I just have picked up the ones I took a fancy to along the way.
