z-0090.JPG Hi,

Does anyone know anything about a Designer called Charles of Miami? I found this evening cape by them and was also wondering if you could tell me more information about it please. I found a similar style that is Housed by the Metropolitan museum. Link Below.

In a quick look, I did not found a lot of information about Charles of Miami, but it seems that they made sweaters/wraps for younger girls:

-- An ad from 1957 touts a Charles of Miami "...soft Orlon bulky (sweater) with lacy border" for "young Christmas carolers."
-- A 1961 ad for Charles of Miami sweaters notes that they are "Glamour-Wraps for young sophisticates."
-- A 1964 ad features "warm and kitten soft" 100% Orlon acrylic sweaters "for a good little girl."

I also found a reference to a 1965 letter from William Friedhofer, president of Charles of Miami, written to government officials who were considering legislation about labels identifying country of origin of textiles.

Ikranieri,

Thank you so much for the information you found for me.

Do you happen to know anything about the style of cape, sorry the picture is wonky. The cape is covered in either paste, glass or Rhinestones with the ecru embellishment.

What date would the cape be?

Hi,

That is a lovely cape. Can you show the cape turned right side, so we can get a better idea of the shape and lines? It is often a bit harder to date things when they are elongated and sideways. I get a 1960s vibe from it, with the wool or blend knit fabric (not sure what it is) and the embellishment techniques.

Other than the color, I really see no similarity at all between your cape and the CF Worth cape. But it was nice to see the link.

I see '60s too, and think it could be one of those "Glamour-Wraps for young sophisticates" that Lynne mentions. If you could display it flat or describe the shape, it might help too.

Nope, that doesn't provide any extra information but I'm confident that we have the answer for this lovely style. Everything about it, plus the label suggests '60s - I love the idea of "glamour wraps" and might have to use that phrase.
