Hi! Wondered if you could tell me if Chinese Military rank badges vary in value depending on the rank. For instance would a 1st rank badge be worth more than a 4th or 5th rank badge. I found a great site online that has all kinds of info re: chinese rank badges but made no mention of values. Thanks!

gosh -

I know nothing of chinese badges. But maybe it would help folks to see a photo. This may jog memories of people that have seen them/but it was long ago. Also, what era are they? Fairly recent or from a particular war? also is there any provenance?

Hello, I have a pair of male censor, xie zha, 1st Rank military badges. They date circa 1875-1908 & in excellent condition. They have a counted stitch & couched mettalic work. They have been made into a lovely evening purse with jadelite handles. I know there was one that recently sold on ebay for $150.00, but Im wondering if these may be worth more. Thanks!

I could be wrong, but even if they are military rank badges, you are not likely to find the information you seek by looking for military memorabilia. Rank badges in China were used to denote not just military rank but social standing. I do not pretend to understand much more than that other than the rank seems to be rather complicated. I'm sure that there are some books out there that discuss Chinese rank but they may not be much help in figuring out the value.

My initial thought is that since these have been made into a purse, probably first quarter of the 20th century, they may not have as much value as if in their original state. Perhaps I'm wrong but I would think the range that you find on eBay for similar items might be fairly accurate.
