I understand that there are some VFG members that might be able to help me with these shoes. Before I go running up to the Chinese restaurant up the street, I thought I'd try them here. You were all so kind and helpful with my last posting.

These were from an auction of a museum's overflow.

Not a strong area of my expertise, but the black satin shoes are Manchu, or northern Chinese style shoes, they appear to be men's, typical of what was worn in the northern provinces in the early 20th century - the style was gone by the 1940s. The woven straw shoes are provincial, but I'm not exactly sure from where. They are are more likely worn as winter overshoes and they are likely Chinese, but exactly where in China I don't know - my guess would be somehwere in the north.

Thank you! I appreciate your answer. The "antique" experts on the ebay disscussion board pooh poohed them; said that they didn't have any age.

The straw shoes might not be that old - its so hard to tell because they are a traditional style. These weren't made for export to the West - and the black satin shoes weren't being made during Mao's reign. They were probably brought back as souvenirs by a missionary in the 1920s or 30s...
