Is there anywhere/site that has a pictorial directory of collections from the 50's 60's?
I have a dress suit from the Paris boutique, numbered label but immaculate condition as it was never worn (mother bought for a wedding but never wore it) the styling and the execution are fantastic - unfortunately no pics as its in storage in Devon - would love to be able to date it properly.

No, I don't know of a resource - I doubt that even Dior recorded the collections properly.

If you post pics of the dress when you have it, we can help with dating - there's quite a lot of material available on Dior styles, and with a bit of luck it can be located in media or photos somewhere.

Also, if the mother bought it for a wedding, see if you can find out when the wedding was! Someone in the family should remember as long as they can remember who's wedding it was.

I look forward to seeing it.

fraid no help on the family side they are all gone now. will be retrieving suit early to mid feb so will do pics then.

the label is the same as the one in label resources right hand colomn second one down - am gutted she couldnt have chosen one with the actual date/season in - would have made it easier!!

Dior actually did keep meticulous records of every garment created and to whom it was sold etc. However, getting access to that is nearly impossible. Unless you are doing your thesis on Dior, chances are slim anyone will even take your call. If you go through the online L'Officiel magazines they featured a LOT of Dior, especially after about 1948 (they didn' t love him the first year because he was the new kid on the block), and there are some books that discuss the seasonal collections - the Met did a book about Dior that features the iconic dress from each year, and there is a German publication that was printed in English that covers Dior year by year. Also, on of the earliest books about Dior (the one with the black and white houndstooth check cover) also discusses his seasonal collections. None of them divulge much information about the numbering system used on the Bolducs, but occasionally there is information in some of the books. At any rate - you picked the easiest designer to track down as there is more written about him than anyone else - I think he even eclipses Chanel right now - so when you get a chance to pull the dress out you can find a lot of information online and in your library.

Until I retrieve it for photographing maybe colours might help me loosely date it Its a gorgeous grass green and ivory check, more 2 colour tartan than dogs tooth. And the lining was equisite monogrammed silky ivory too.
Im going to google with the colours to see if he favoured them in a particular period, also had that small horizontal strap at the small of the back - i cant remember proper terminology - i refer to it as a back epaulette (probably way off mark with the name ) but i know what i mean!
