Closet Cleanse today-I\'m going in

Hi Everyone,
O.k. todays the big day, I'm going to dejunk my closet.
I was watching oprah and she had a show called from frumpy to fabulous.
They were giving tips on what to wear and they said if you haven't worn it in a year get rid of it.
I have a closet full of that kind of stuff and today it goes.
I really can't say why I keep buying stuff that is so darn cute but I have no place to wear it or it really doesn't fit.
I do know I have a whole closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.

Darn it I want to go from frumpy to fabulous too. Anyone else have this dilema.

I'll report in later and tell you what I found in there, I'm going in....

My only advice is be sure you really will never wear it again. I have done many closet cleans - sometimes I have donated the clothing to the Opera's almost new sale - called "Act II" and sometimes to other charities and sometimes the clothes were so well worn that they ended in the rag pile - or the trash. If it's faded, worn, stained or has holes it's easy. But if it's just a little snug and you love it you may regret tossing it later.

I have many pieces that I have not worn in a year that I am saving - because I still like them - and they are "classics." I do get rid of "trendy" pieces and try not to buy them. I've been concentrating on adding to my vintage wardrobe - some are pieces that may not have been worn in 50-60 years!

Once you've cleaned the closet you'll have room for lots more - vintage!

I completely agree with everything that Linn has said, and will just add that I've often rediscovered stuff in my wardrobe that I have never worn, or haven't worn for up to ten years, that suddenly makes sense and becomes my new favourite!

So exercise caution in your wardrobe purge, especially if you're dithering about something with some quality and/or style to it.

Once you've thinned it all out, you might see the potential in some of those better garments!

Also, I would urge you to avoid throwing anything that might end up as landfill. Maybe you could donate good condition items to charity, and try to ensure that damaged/worn ones are sent to recycling mills where they can be mashed into paper or insulation and so on (charity concerns should do this with unsellable donations anyway, btw).

Good luck!

Sarah

You can always sell the 'good' stuff on eBay. Maybe. ;)

Good luck with the adventure.

Thanks everyone for your advice and wise tips.
I went through the closet and I purged a almost chest high piler of clothes and shoes. I am going to donate it to st vincent de Paul and Goodwill. Hopefully that will bring me good karma for future shopping expeditions there.
I found a ton of clothes that were keepers that I had forgotten about. Anything that didn't fit went.

I would call my style hippie chic, so I had about 30 of those cute broomstick skirts, I kept about 10 donated a few and put the rest aside for my best friend in Nebraska.
It feels great to have everything all cleaned and organized and now I know when I reach for something, I like it and it fits, and the most important part now I have room for more! :)

Now I have to deal with a whole basement full of vintage. Some I plan on selling in the yard sale and I have a lady coming on Tuesday who want some for consignment at her shop.
Than the rest is going to get donated I think or I might let all the girls in the family come see if they want anything.
I really need to get rid of these things because I want to go back to just selling jewelry, and I have drawers full of that to go through too, I think I need to go to Vintage shoppers anonymous.

oooo, Sue, i'm in Iowa, but that's just not quite close enough to come help buy up your basement! lol ~

congratulations and continued good luck on lightening your life ~

Good luck Sue! I've been meaning to have a sort through my own clothes for the best part of a year but . . . . :icon_dante:

I've just had a massive sort out in my office/work room and I'm delighted with the results. Everything is super-tidy and organised. Yay! Somehow it's made my brain feel clearer - not a bad thing for me! :duh:

There's nothing better than a good closet clean-out every now and then!

I usually do it twice a year, when I change from summer to winter - that's when the shorts come down from the upper most shelves, and the big sweaters go up there - or the other way 'round.

What's still really, really nice I try to sell at the flea-market we go to once a year, or if it's a brand name, maybe in an online auction. Other clothes that are still nice but I think have no great potential for the flea-market go to the Caritas container. They will then be sold at their secondhand stores, or go abroad to their charity projects.
