Clothing Dreams

I keep a dream diary, and I am amazed how many times I dream about thrift shops, and clothing. One dream keeps repeating : It's a big old warehouse with room after room of racks. I head for the winter coats, and piles of dresses. The clerks are always sympathetic older women who never say an unkind word.

Of course, I get great stuff, and awaken when I am about to get out of there with hundreds of dollars worth of vintage things for a quarter. I think "I know they are going to stop me". The things in dreams are always really neat. Flat colored transparent elephant lollipops. Pastry shops. Tea houses. I can recall so many little details if I write them down when I first awaken. Anyone else have clothing dreams with super stuff ?

I have those all the time! I call them "Heaven" dreams: lots and lots of wonderful vintage clothing for me to buy with pennies.....my sister (who shares my vintage passion) has them too. I suspect we're all likewise afflicted :)

Oh, yes, we've all had them...blissful shopping extravaganzas, rack upon rack of mint condition goodies for practically nothing, and NO competition.
Our poor hubbies...we wake up and have such a look of disappointment on our faces when we realize where we are (and are not)!

I have the antique HELL dream. I'm alone in the estate...others dealers are howling and scrabbling at the doors and windows. The basement? attic? is filthy, covered with cobwebs, unlit. I drag item after item into the light, brush off the dirt, and...voila! the fatal flaw is revealed. Chipped, cracked, broken, motheaten....:o

I must be a 'glass half empty' kinda girl....!

In my dreams I arrive at my store to open only to discover that I'd forgotten to lock up last night and strangers have moved into my space. They've set up beds in my office, are taking sink baths and leaving wet towels all over, and of course had a party last night so there are empty bottles and messes everywhere, and a few drunken friends passed out near the fitting rooms.

That actually happened at our store in 1969....we stayed up most of the night dealing with an enormous clothing buy, leaving 20s and 30s velvets heaped on every surface and the door unlocked.

We overslept our opening, and woke to to hear the shop humming below. The door was wide open, the counter was covered with hundreds of dollars, and notes....'I bought the brown velvet 30s dress and paid $25.00. If that is not enough, call Carol+ a phone number.'

A complete stranger was sitting at the counter and said he'd come in and noticed the money and 'thought maybe he should stay'.

I don't believe a single item was missing, and our phantom customers had probably paid us more than we'd have charged.

How strange! I had a vintage dream last night too! I dreamed I was in Montreal on Sherbrooke street and I had on a floral full skirted shirtwaist dress and my late 50's- early 60's black heels. There was a new vintage shop that opened up and it had two stories with 50's atomic style stairs going up to the 2nd floor.

As you came in, there was the counter where you pay and it had all vintage accessories decorated around it and there was a 50's pink silk longline strapless bra in a pack for £4.25 (LOL, dream was in Canada but prices were in pounds!). In the next room with the atomic style stairs there was all vintage men's stuff- all new old stock and then I went upstairs and there were boxes of NOS corsets and girdles and I dind't know where to look first and wanted to bu everything before anyone else go it!

"Hello, my name is Carrie, it's been 6 weeks since my last estate or thrift sale.

Are there 12 step programs for this??? "

 I think that would be a pretty full meeting house with the likes of us!

Maryalice, that is one of the most wonderful Portland stories I've ever heard. I'm going to be telling it at all the holiday parties I go to, starting this afternoon.

It's only the last four years that I've been hunting for and selling vintage clothing, but I've been a thrift store and estate sale hound for many years, and I've had lots of dreams like the rest of you describe: alone in the shop or estate sale, surrounded by a staggering variety of amazing goods, making piles of it, and no one coming in to intrude on me. In one dream I remember going through the drawers of a dresser, beautifully hand-painted in charming, baby-related motifs, and finding that they were nearly bottomless and full of the most spectacular paper goods and odd textiles ever. Pop-up cards that popped up with extraordinary stenciled, embossed cutouts about 10 levels deep; a jade green snuff bottle in the shape of a turban-wearing elephant; a collar crocheted in silver threads embellished with amazing little seashells in art nouveau designs ... it went on and on, a very visually rich dream.

I remember that when I woke up I deliberately didn't stir, just kept going over all the details in my conscious mind over and over so I could retain as much of it as possible. I had that dream probably 30 years ago, and it still comes back to me vividly.
