Coat dating help 30s? and advice

Well,

I am not good with the earlier stuff because I have little experience with it, I initially though early 30s but I am not so sure.

Home made, and has been slightly shortened in front, not cut just more hem allowance in the front than back. It is velvet and many of the seams need repairs. I am actually lucky, when I picked it up I thought one of the sleeves were shreded, come to find out, they constructed each sleeve a little different to get the shape and that one sleeve just needs to be sewn back together. They are shaped like buckets? The elbow has a large square of fabric. It has one black large metal snap on inside waist and one hook and eye set on the outside (at waist). There is one snap under the rose ornament at the bust. It is not a broach, just a piece of metal sewn on top of the snap. I don't know if it was one unless I take it off to get a look at the back.

I adjusted the mannequins height to be equal with my shoulders. I am 5'4"

So qeustions, age? and what do I call this; a lounge coat/robe? And what style of sleeve is this? You can get better pictures HERE ,sorry I can not find my camera so I had to take this with a cell phone!
Is this thing worth sewing back together, is there interest in this type of garment?

Thank you,
Jennifer

Hi,

You say this is home made? Much of it looks spot-on early 1930's especially the smocking and the boxed shaping of the sleeves. I have had early 30's gowns and coats with this same treatment. But the bright gold collar looks more modern that the velvet...is it original to the garment? It almost appears as if someone took a 1930's long evening coat or lounging robe and altered it with the new collar and perhaps the gold snap thing is added too. Also the velvet string bow ties at the ends of the collar look "wrong" for early 1930's. Are the velvet bows made of the exact same velvet as the rest of the garment? Is the velvet on this garment similar to the antique chiffon velvets or silk velvets, with a lush fine dense nap? Also, has the lining been removed? A coat would have have a lining, a robe usually not so that might be a clue as to its original use. I cannot tell from the photos here and your link goes to Facebook which I am not on. In my experience the shorter length in front is not a huge consideration, as shorter ladies may prefer it, but If it has been significantly altered from the original design, the interest will be far less than if it is all original.

Agree with early 1930s, I would call it an opera coat. It does seem to have some alterations; not uncommon. I agree with Barbara that the gold collar might be a more modern addition.

Personally, I would repair it as you won't get much for it in current condition - even if you did some simple repairs, to make it wearable, and disclose - might be a good idea. It's a beautiful piece.

Thank you,

Yeah the construction and the velevet does seem older, but the collar made me secondguess myself, however the little bows are made from the same velvet, Perhaps that is why the front is shorter, they snipped some fabric?

The collar is made of rows of yarn and sequins with some metal like thread, not lame' but almost like wire. Never really seen anything like it before lol. I was just curious.

If need be I can get better pictures. I found my camera woohoo, but not that important,

and of course I would disclose any repairs :-)

Would it be a appropiate to ask for a low end suggestion on pricing? I am not out to make a killing or anything something fair and sellable since I won't be auctioning this. If I am putting time into it I need to have a set price.

oh and term for those sleeves?

Thank you both!!

also, there is no lining or appearance to ever had one, but as I said some seams are shot.

Would fixing the seams and reenforcing the whole thing be "acceptable" or should I leave that to the new owner? it it totally wearable and the velvet strong. just the trhead is not lol.
