I just made the most amazing haul at my local Caritas store. They had boxes and boxes of what appeared to be vintage buttons and belt buckles in their shop window. I finally had the time to go there today. It was breathtaking. Apparently the stuff came from someone private, but I guess originally that was all old stock from a shop, as it was all unused, buttons on cardboard, and sometimes with old labels as well. They had vintage buttons of all kinds, belt buckles and other belt closures - loads of them in mother of pearl, big and small, but also metal and what might be bakelite - a lot of it definitely art deco in style, and some gloves as well. There were also the most delicate little lace collars and front inserts (I can't think of a better way to describe them right now) for dresses or blouses. My rough guess is the range goes from Teens to 1950s. On a lot of buckles, sadly the metal has started to rust, and some of the lace things had small stains or started to deteriorate - just from age and storage I guess, some of them are so incredibly delicate...
So I'll probably be posting a few things here to ask for a date verification. Some of the things I will keep for myself or my mom will want them for sewing, but a few things will go to my online shop. I just picked out what appealed most to me, and was in good condition. Apparently this is already the third of their stores where they moved this inventory to, so there must have been tons they had to sell - and they still have so much!
So here are my first three pieces - of all the lace collars etc., I liked these best, and they are pristine. First is a long front insert with collar - my guess is 1920s, since it's so long? I can just see this in a drop-waist dress. There is a little label at the bottom with a few hand-written numbers on it. It's made from a beautiful crepe in off-white and navy.
Second is a peach-colored little insert with a lice edge. Again a crepe, but this one is shiny. I have been wondering about it's purpose - was that something one would attach to a dress from the inside so that one's modesty was preserved? 20s?
Third is a fun little thing that I would call a sew-on jabot, for lack of a better expression. Also crepe. 30s?

What are your thoughts on dating / purpose of / calling these things?
I just think they're so pretty...
