Sunday - 10 pm - Mad Men !!!!

THIS INTERVIEW with the woman who does the styling for the show is a bit discouraging because it sounds as if she is doing more and more of the designing herself, rather than buying authentic vintage.

and then Thursday 10 pm (on Lifetime) - Project Runway!

And there’s a show afterwards - “Models of the Runway” which might be interesting.

I also like “Top Chef” which starts Wednesday at 9 pm on Bravo - and I have been enjoying “Top Chef Masters.” My Tivo will be hard at work.

Great article, Amanda.. but sad its not more favorable to the vintage that is available. :(

Jon Hamm has been doing the "talk show" circuit all week.. which was nice.. can't get enough of him! lol..

and he did say the fashion would be "transitioning" as the time period of the show moves forward..

so will they be wearing 70s clothing next?

I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED!!!!

Yvonne-

I'm guessing they'll start moving towards the more iconic 60's stuff - mini dresses, Mod & A-line stuff. At this point in the show (as of LAST season), their clothes would still appear more 50's than anything else to the average person. Of course, VFG members & others who've done a bit more studying (or have firsthand experience and a good memory!) would know better...

But I have a question!!!

You know, for all the women, the female characters, designing for them really starts from the foundations and I'm really into lingerie and how that makes a woman feel. And especially for that period, the bras and the girdles, and the stockings, and the slips and the tips that they would wear in their bras— all of those pieces are really the beginning of everything. So, you know, it is detailed down to their underwear.

What does she mean - "tips that they would wear in their bras"....???? I NEED to know!!!

I really enjoyed reading this. I am still watching Season II. I have completed six episodes and was really surprised that the introduciton on episode six showed a woman putting on "pantyhose." This is episode takes place in 1962 and pantihose were not available until a little later in the '60's. I'm pretty sure they were not mass-produced until around 1965. The bikini that Betty Draper bought at the auction is way too bare for the times as well.

The other thing about the "costuming" that I find interesting is that there is not as much "tribute" to Jackie in the clothes as to an earlier era or to "Marilyn." By 1962, a lot of American women were copying the First Lady and were wearing boxy suits with 3/4 length sleeves and sleeveless shifts - and pillbox hats!

I have heard they did wear pads to give them extra 'oomph', and I've seen them called 'tips'. My favourite repro lingerie company, What Katie Did, sells a repro version of Bullet Bra Pads. (i know i know, repro, sorry, but you try getting a vintage 50s bra in a DD).

I also remember a quote from Marilyn Monroe when she was asked if she wore 'falsies', to which she replied "Everything I have is my own".

And here's one of the cast talking about wearing them:

I don't love the clothing either Linn - it all looks nice and the show is styled well but its a little one dimensional with all the dresses being a titch too tight and a lack of plaid skirts and white blouses and boxy suits for what was really being worn in the office then. There are too few short haircuts too - most working women had shorter curled 'Queen Elizabeth' hairdos.
