Confidence with fashion + springing a surprise

As some of you know I changes my image dramatically over the last few month, This may sound daft I decided if I could create and develop my own style with fashions it might give me more overall confidence with my overall appearance it instead of trying to follow trends and blend in.

I have a friend who lives local very supportive of my interest in fashion, she married with 2.4 children and a similar age to me, I see her mainly getting into her car and walking her dog in the distance over the fields in front of my house, unfortunate she does not really get the whole vintage thing like we do here and not really understand the significance of wearing a 50 years old original outfit tha's only a small point .

Last weekend I bought a skirt from a charity shop becuse I liked the styles , Button through and pleated with a high waist band mirrored also at the hem, I felt it was something different and might work for me also , admirably I did not know then just how.

In the everning I was playing around with different styles of tops and shade and also trying out boots and shoes with this skirt trying to make it work for me I settle on a combination which I thought was radical for me making a definate statement so I when with that look.

I noticed my friend coming across the field with her old dog trotting behind, I swallowed the bullet and decided to go out and meet her slightly up the street, knowing full well that she never seen the "new me" with my grey curly hair and wearing this slightly OTT outfit

I do not want to sound vain but I felt in my own mind that I looked the best I have ever done and the most feminine to date. There was a part of me that wanted to see a look of surprise on my friend face as meet you to chat for a while.
Every thing when really well and I sure she did not really know what to say but did say my new hair styles suited me and paid a complement about my makeup which for one i had my eye liner nice and even, adding that she had shoes on the same colour as me, added I could do with a matching bag.
She even added as a parting remark "We girls have to stick together" which i though was very kind of her.

Any how I had to write this up and share the look i created as a more mature lady who dresses just ever so slightly too young which is the look i trying to wear today, as you often see that been done around here when you go shopping lol.

Thanks for reading this

You Look WONDERFUL Pauline!

I love that your neighbor is so cool. That's just awesome.

This skirt looks terrific on you. Show off those gams, darlin.'

I love the red shoes with this - I may even go for a wilder color. Or a brighter scarf, perhaps?

As to matching your bag to your shoes, Clinton Kelley says that's very OUT ;-)

I have a bright red purse that I carry with everything all year round.
Unless I wear red. Then I carry a different one. Usually my baby blue or purple one.
I actually attempt to make my handbag clash with what I'm wearing. LOL!

Great outfit Pauline! And I really like that skirt -- seems to have a subtle bubble effect, which is very attractive.

It also sounds like you have a lovely neighbor and someone who will become a great friend, as you get to know each other better. Is that the view from your home, btw? Looks like a lovely sunset. :sunshine:

Thank you very much for your nice comments, I think a " wilder" colour for the shoes or scalf will help,
Yes Laura it part of the view from my house, the hills in the back ground are about 5 miles to the east I can see about 30 mile as there is a hill with a white horse pointed onto it and I can just see that on a good day.

We can be a little odd in the UK with white paint and hills.

What fabulous scenic views and that horse is amazing! Thank you for the pics!

I googled to learn more and found these fascinating facts...

"Key Dates:
1896 The Kilburn White Horse was severely damaged in a storm.
1925 Following a time just after World War I when the Kilburn White Horse was allowed to fall into disrepair. The Yorkshire Evening Post came to the rescue and started a restoration fund to pay for the necessary grooming.
1939 With the dawning of WWII, the Kilburn White Horse was covered over so that this distinctive landmark could not be used by German bombers as a aid to navigation whilst attacking Britain. It remained covered until 1946."

OK, back to fashion, but just had to learn a little about the majestic hillside horse of Kilburn :)

Oh Laura you put me to shame,

It's on my door step and you found out more info in a short time than me lol

The hills in the back ground of my are the end of a dale where my farthers familly has lived since the 1500's
in short they moved about 1 mile every 100 years!

in short here are my roots

My pleasure Linn,

If you want a vintage fashion angle then these some of the upland hill sheep farms and the wool transported to the mills in Bradford an hour away car today longer by horse and cart.

(the yorkshire dales are well know for sheep, there also other area of the UK just as notable just so that I do not upset any one else from the UK)

You look wonderful Pauline, very well put together and feminine, and I really like those shoes and the pale tights.

I love our British white horses - they are usually made by cutting the earth back to the white chalk of the hillside, rather than paint - and as you say we can be very odd about our hill decoration - as anyone who cares to google Cerne Abbas Giant will see.

Yes The Kilburn White Horse is a copy certainly no chalk in those hill. Imagine one day getting up and thinking well I paint the white horse on that hill today, what would the locals have said back then at seeing it.
:hysterical:

Back on fashion thank you Golden age, I often do wonder how "femine I look" and more important do others see me as feminie and what is feminie!

any how that's deep thinking for a Monday morning.

I saw the Uffington White Horse recently on "Location, Location, Location" on TV (love Phil and Kirsty) and it was great seeing it up close and hearing a bit about it.

My dad was born in Scarborough during WW2. I haven't been there but in 1992 I spent a few days in York and Whitby. It's a beautiful part of the country.

I love your t-bar shoes Pauline - they look quite comfortable too. I'm sorry to hear that it's not done to match your shoes and handbag. I guess I'll have to be a bit old fashioned about that, as I wear black patent.

There are several of those type of programs running a close friend was on one of those several years ago so I got a insight into how they made it also, as you say you do learn a little also.

You would like Scarborough it's best just out of season I think, I normally go on holiday there, York great also very good shopping apart from history, just have been told about a new vintage shop which has opened do not know where it is I have to put on my private detective hat on.

I like the heel shape with the shown just something about it that I find atttractive, handbags are not my greates strength, I think it's becuse it the most fake part of my outfit as there never anything in them.

I'm all about patent too, but lately its been camel colored patent rather than black (oh, and then the lime green platforms) - need to find a replacement pair of black.

I think matching shoes and handbag are very appropriate for a vintage or vintage inspired outfit. It was just what was done. For me, there are more "marriages" versus matched sets. Things just get separated over time or one finds a bag and shoes that match exactly, but the shoe is not in the right size so it blows the set.

What are the rules for matching bags and shoe:-

Vintage correct then , bags and shoes should match.

Today anything goes, Bags and shoes can match or do not have to.

Is that right?

I don' t think there are rules as such! As far as I understand it, traditionally, shoes should match handbags, for formal dressing especially, but fashion has also rebelled against that rule, and being too 'matchy matchy' was a fashion no-no for a while. I think matching shoes and handbags is coming back into fashion, especially with tailoring being fashionable.

But anything you can work is good. Good clashing can be harder to pull off than good matching, and very effective when done right. I also like marriages rather than matches, as patent leather shoes said. As a UK 8 in shoes, I rarely find vintage shoes, and marry modern shoes with vintage bags a lot.

I was brought up on "matching" and still tend to do that when wearing vintage, when it works. But , I have an "everyday" handbag and don't change it at the drop of a hat - especially, when travelling.

I like my shoes and handbag to either match or complement each other - not as a set but in style, color and period. I try to select a handbag that is the same "age" as the vintage outfit - when possible. Today I am going to a luncheon meeting. I'm going to wear a plaid '50's shirtwaist and my "everyday'' handbag which blends with the dress but does not match. If I were dressing more formally I would change the bag. I do not wear vintage shoes, either, and will probably wear flats that are one of the colors in the dress - or match the belt.

Sometimes I select a handbag or shoes in a contrasting or complimentary (not clashing) color to the outfit - but I really prefer them to be the same color when possible.
