Could anyone help me date this vintage letterman jacket?

This thing is seriously driving me crazy.

When I picked it up, my initial feeling was that it was from the 1980s -- the wool is in perfect condition, as is the lining and the rest of the jacket. The fabric *feels* like it's wool from the 1980s to my hands.

However! When I examined it more closely I found a tag written in a very un-1980s like font (looks more like mid- to late- 60s to me) and listing a WPL number. The tag, unlike the wool, feels like other paper tags from the mid-60s.

Now, I know that WPL numbers could be used by companies they were assigned to even after the switch to RN numbers, but I would find it surprising for the same font / tag to be used into the 1980s.

I've looked up the sportswear company listed in the RN/WPL# database, and unfortunately can't find any other information about it.

Lastly, I am almost positive that the jacket cannot be from before 1965, as Pope John School (at least the one in my area) was not founded until 1965.

Any ideas / gut feelings, vintage lovers? If I can't figure anything out, I suppose I'll call the school on Monday and see if they'd be willing to help me out...

I am not an expert at all but I was in high school in the 80s and can tell you that looks almost exactly like the cheerleading coats we had. We had some that had a waistband and some that didn't. I also seem to remember them having a paper-like tag in them.

I am sure you will get some expert opinions very shortly.

Yeah In the the eighties they had coats like that. Hadone. But they pretty much kept the same style of coats form the sixties to 80's so it make sit hard to date,

Pretty sure it's 80s. The earlier jackets would have had a webbing waistband. And did cheerleaders even have their own jackets before then? I thought they just wore their boyfriends'.
