Could it be?

There was a collector on one of our daytime shows the other day. She described how, when you love a label/designer, you can just tell you've found one - even from the sleeve. I saw a few inches of this before I pounced (my poker face went out the window). I scoured and scoured but could not find that label I KNEW it should have.....

Black moss crepe with satin. LOW front, LOW back (I've not even shot the back yet, eek!!) satin tie at neck and ties at the sleeves......

Oh man... is there a sad little label stub or nothing at all??

Well, without the Ossie stamp (??) it'll just have to stay unsung in your wardrobe, right? The height of vamp!

It's not my size (*weeps quietly*) so I may yet have to convince the masses and sell it.....

No stub but loose threads imply something was once stitched there. Not even a moss crepe label (and I KNOW it is because it is exactly the same fabric as my Ossie for Radley - which has the exact same satin fabric too)

Waaaaaaaaaaaaah

You know what? You've got some irritatingly proper and genteel former owner to thank for that.

You can always try the 'attributed to' thang (which may be working for Daniel, the second time around). Other than that, I suppose the only hope is a contemporary mag pic with this style definitely identified...

:(

Irritatingly proper and genteel? In a scandalous dress like this?? ;) Vandal more like!!

I may have to try Daniel's trick. I think an Ossie collector would know for sure as well, but maybe not one for the label fiends....

Here's the back view....

Have you checked with Daniel? - I'm almost sure someone, a l-o-n-g while back had this dress, and it was an Ossie.....maybe Daniel remembers?

I do not know Ossie styles that well, but even before I finished
reading your post, I thought, OMG that looks like an Ossie! A hardened
Ossie fan (Daniel?) should know.

Good eye there!

Sue:)

My first impression in seeing the photo was Ossie as well. That dress is drop dead gorgeous, no matter who the actual designer was.

Thanks everyone!! :) I'm hoping either Daniel will know straight-off or if he will know someone who could confirm for me. I know he's mentioned an Ossie expert who assessed his Radley.....

Here's the wrap style that 20th century vintage have up on their website - you've probably already found it, but D's post on the VCA made me go look for it...

In any case you've got grounds for close comparison...
Some of the Ossie-for-Radley dresses sometimes have zips, right?

Ah, I thought I'd seen ties and zips combined somewhere:

Hey!! Yes, I saw that dress and wondered if this was a modified version. I didn't really think that zips were an issue. I've had two O for R dresses with metal zips.

Funny thing is, that dress on eBay REALLY looks like one I have - sans label - which I've always been curious to investigate. I think I'll take some pictures tomorrow.....

Congrats with the bids on yours! I shall be keeping an eye on that Marie France top - but I suspect Daniel may well bid for it. :)

Yup - I bet you've got good grounds here.
I think the zip thing may be an example of retrospective idealizing purification of a designer's style, whereas when it came down to it on the Radley-adapted-designs front (especially for tied dresses) I'm sure they just went with what was practical.

The bids - yes, I was pleased when some cards were laid on the table today! I was already getting obsessed with watching the watchers (*twitches*). More watchers on the Valentino jacket than the Ossie, surprisingly (and a smaller, more select group interested in Marie), although the lady currently bidding on the jacket appears to be actually wanting a riding jacket... which kind of worries me... Going to sit it out!

I think the zip thing may be an example of retrospective idealizing purification of a designer's style

Do you mean that the modern perspective is making a sweeping generalisation about Ossie not using zips in his work? They were very vehement about it in the V&A exhibition, but most of the Radleys I've seen (even the most stunning) seem to have zips. Like you say, I'm sure this was easier and more effective for the manufacturers and I find it frustrating that the 'zip issue' is even an issue. If you know what I mean?

Do you use Sellathon?? It's so dangerous isn't it, especially on star items - you find yourself checking back every half an hour or so ;)

I had the Sellathon trial, and it took over my brain (kind of like the Tripods, but without the forehead tattoo...), so I never subscribed to it properly, on the grounds that I could easily become obsessed. No, I was just checking back every now and then to see if my Ebay 'watchers' number had increased (still going up bit by bit) and thinking 'bid, damn you!'

As you do.

Ah, this is so healthy.... ;)

Oh, that's the one you were talking about above... riiiiiight - I think we were talking about different ones before...
