Could this be 40\'s?

I have had two VFG members question whether this piece, which I listed as “Vintage 80s does 40s”, on Etsy, is in fact, genuine 40’s. I assumed it was later because it says “Dry Clean” on the tag. Did they have dry cleaning in the 40’s? Because I thought it was recent I hadn’t added the tag photo to the listing. My bad.

The tag says “fashioned by Stylebest - Knitting Mills NY - 100 % rayon boucle - Dry Clean.”

The pearls and the silver stitching, definitely look older, but the piece is in such good shape I just assumed it was newer.

It looks classic mid 50s to me -- exactly the sort of thing that was often paired up with a circle skirt

I would have to go with 40s or early 50s on this one. It most likely was never used and kept well. Luckily, it does happen, there are people who keep their clothes and just never get around to using them.. It's a great pin-up girl sweater!

I agree with Jonathan in dating this sweater. Dry cleaning as we know it has been around for a long time. Here's a good link;

I was one of the members who emailed Amanda about this darling sweater, I didn't want her to shortchange herself on it because I think it's terrific!

I actually thought it might be part of one of the late 40s - early 50s sweater suits with the matching rib knit skirts.

I'm with the 50s bunch. ;-)

I think mostly due to the cut of the sleeve.
I can't see that under a 40's suit as they are all so tailored & the sleeve would be all bunched up under the jacket.
Raglan sleeves were extrememly popular in the 50s.
