Cummerbund / Cummerband?

They're both accepted spellings, but which do you think is in more general usage, and is it okay to use it for this feature-ish?

I think it might be a regional type of thing. In Canada, we use cumberbund.

Cummerbund is the typical spelling/pronunciation in the U.S., although I have heard cumberbund. But I suspect that if "cummerband" is an accepted usage, it is only because it is one of those words that has been so widely misspelled that people "think" it's correct. And it "sneaks" its way into the language. Like collectables (which is not right, but has become accepted) or tendinitis (nobody has a tendin, they have tendons, which become inflamed--resulting in tendonitis), which is wrong, too. Phonetic spelling used as a crutch for schoolkids for too long has screwed up the language so badly....

I am in Canada too, and I must admit I always thought it was cumberbund, I was shocked when I first saw the cummerbund spelling a few years ago.
