Cummerbund / Cummerband?

They're both accepted spellings, but which do you think is in more general usage, and is it okay to use it for this feature-ish?

LOL..Cummerbund....but the states may have their ow way of spelling it..
 
ooo err...Ive always pronounced it cummer, bund as spelt....popular culture changes everything though..
 
Cummerbund is the typical spelling/pronunciation in the U.S., although I have heard cumberbund. But I suspect that if "cummerband" is an accepted usage, it is only because it is one of those words that has been so widely misspelled that people "think" it's correct. And it "sneaks" its way into the language. Like collectables (which is not right, but has become accepted) or tendinitis (nobody has a tendin, they have tendons, which become inflamed--resulting in tendonitis), which is wrong, too. Phonetic spelling used as a crutch for schoolkids for too long has screwed up the language so badly....
