Curly lambswool coat

Just thrifted this coat and brought it in to patch up a few spots (pictured). The furrier said it was very old and didn’t think it was worth investing too much in.
I thought of gently steaming it with a hand steamer on a low setting just to freshen it up. Can you tell me anything about it and when it’s from? It has no musty smell and it seems well cared for but I’m wondering if a gentle hand steaming is a good idea or if there’s another method I should use to give it some TLC. Thanks!

Did the furrier refuse to clean it? I personally wouldn't use steam on vintage fur. If there is no odor, you could gently brush it to remove and surface soiling.

He did not refuse. He just said it would cost the price I paid for the coat in order to to clean it and he didn’t feel it was worth it. I’m already paying more than that price to repair it and that was the priority. I was wondering what I could do at home to keep it conditioned and keep it from drying out.

Also, if anyone could tell me anything about this coat (is it Persian fur with a mink collar? 40s or 50s?) I’d love to know.

Hi there, the fur is Persian lamb with a mink fur collar. I'd date it to the earlier portion of the 60s. Sadly the skin has dried out which is why the pelts are separating. You can use furrier tape which is double sided tape, try to gently stick it inside one side and inside the other and pinch together. You may or may not be able to do that. It may work. It may not. As previously stated, please do not steam it. The hind side of that fur is skin and if you steam it the skin will harden, crack, and separate from the moisture and heat.
In an effort to prolong the current condition it should be stored in a cool spacious area when not worn and loved and cared for while being worn.

Thanks so much for your advice! I’ve read on other posts about airing the coat out on a cool, moist night. Do you think that would be helpful in my case?

You are most welcome. The jacket should be stored in a spacious cool area away from moisture. Exposure to moisture will cause further damage.
