Date a shoe...Solve a Mystery

My husband came home with this today. He was at a home inspection for a house he sold one of his customers. the buyers were selling some things and he probably paid way too much but doesn't like to shoot people down and wanted to help them out as they could have used the money.

they got it from a crazy rich lady who kept everything forever. the frame is fragile and the matting is a little fragile, but workable. We believe this to be a charcoal drawing.

BUT the other intersting thing is that they backed it with something else that had a shoe on it. It doesn't fit on the scanner...but i figured if someone could tell me how old the shoe was we would be able to date it more accurately.

i couldn't scan the whole image.

you can't see any detail how i saved it...but this is the gist of the top half of the picture.

Thanks Jonathan!

and why its on the back of a picture, i can't say...it is thick stock like it was a sign of some sort maybe.

i am wondering though if the picture was not indeed sketched on the reverse side of the shoe and framed versus it being in there and the shoe is just backing.

strange. another mystery not making it easier to preserve it
