Date help on a Marshall and Snelgrove gown...

For some reason, I can't seem to get a handle on a date for this gorgeous gown - any ideas??

Thank you :kiss2: - yes, it's a scrummy colour! I was just completely thrown by it, I did wonder at 40s but then I couldn't really place it with anything else I'd seen. Mid Forties??

Those draped jerseys and chiffons start in the late 1930s and go until the 1970s, so they are really hard to date. Alix/Mme Gres is most known for them Jean Desses and other designers did their fair share of them as well. The wide shoulder straps suggest to me pre 1954ish, after that I would expect to see spaghetti straps. Also the side zip is an earlier feature. However, it could be pre war, but the elongated waist doesn't quite site right for me for it to be that early -- I think the waist would be natural or slightly elevated if it were pre 1941, and because its unlikely that a dress of this quality would be sold during the war, although not impossible, I think its post war 40s or really early 50s, maybe 1950ish.

Thanks Jonathan!! It's possible it might be sitting a bit funny on my mannequin because it's quite a bit larger than her, but late Forties sounds very fair to me!

I am not sure if i should consider looking at it measurementswise that i would look at a strapless or a regular dress..
