Date Help on this \'Dressy-Casual\' please...

I've never really thought properly about the date of this one. I think I picked it up at an old VBO to wear, but it hasn't had the outings... So now I need to describe it properly, what are people's thoughts?

I've managed not to take a shot of the label, but it says 'another Syd Dressy-Casual Chicago'. It's got thin shoulder-pads, and no fastening other than the buttons and a snapper on the waist. All thoughts welcome. It kind of reminds me of a dress Marylin Monroe wears to the audition in All About Eve, but I've always assumed this is later than c. 1950 or so.

thanks!
(And I've just noticed I haven't got the length showing here, but it's just below the knee).

That's a woven bodice, but just on the front:

I suck at dating, I am trying to learn so I won't even chime in... but I just wansted to say I love this dress... Heck I woul wear it out to dinner or something... I wear my vintage to church on sundays! So if you go,, I'ld wear it then :-)

No this is just an awesome dress to me.... just my style an greem is my favorite color.... I LIKE IT!!!

I *know*, it's really great. Just what I normally buy in fact (green is one of my standbys too); but it's hung unworn for too long.

I cycle, swim and climb, so I'm finding it increasingly difficult to keep these cinched, always-need-a-press dresses in my regular wearing wardrobe. (*hangs head* I don't go to church, but I know at least a couple of churches round here in South London where I see people coming out looking at least as smart as this - they look fantastic; hats and everything...)

....

See you should go to join the fashion...'joking'....so are you selling this and if so what is the size???? most importanly the waist lol! :-)

haha, yes it's going on the block. I'm doing the listing now, before nipping out on a few missions. I need to finish up, so if no one suggests an advance on early 50s, i think I'll just say that, and revise if need be...

Waist is 28", and it can't be tight, as it's only kept closed with a little popper!

Hi, just saw the additional qu - yes, the label says 'another Syd Dressy-Casual, Chicago' - it reminds me in lettering and colouring of the early R&K Originals label. I forgot to take a shot; something I may be able to remedy later...

And actually, now I'm having second thoughts about having used 'Sweater Dress' in the title - I was trying to think of a way to describe the bodice thing...

hmmm... I always have to revise these things half a dozen times...

oops... maybe I shouldn't have a link to the auctions in my signature then? er.... *looks shifty and sneaks off*

Well, anyway, they're visible through that. I'm mostly here for the sake of my sanity while I'm trying to do this immense amount of listing. I've just got to get it all out of here in the next week or two. And then there's the small matter of my Visa to get sorted out... :help:

Hi - I think early 50's sounds good. The waist looks as if it's a bit high, which is very 40's - and those cool pockets. I definitely would NOT call it a sweater dress ... that's something altogether different. A photo of the label would help date it probably. Is it missing the top button?

Yes, it is missing the top button, but I've said in the auction that this makes it 'interesting' rather than 'indecent'...

I need to wait for some good light to get a shot of the label, but the style of it fits with late-40s-early-50s in the most general sense.

Thanks for chiming in on the date! It's just one of those where I just wasn't sure any more...

do the sleeves have seams at & above the elbows? Also, I think I have a button that matches the dress, when you shoot the label -shoot a button & let me know, I might be able to send it to the buyer to make the dress perfect!

Hi there, Oh, a matching button would be *extremely* kind and fantastic (lucky buyer!), thank you, but don't go to too much trouble over it - I'm having to concentrate on getting these out as fast as possible (although I already had my shipping delayed last week by a bit of a visa panic - honestly, the time I spend legging it around between centres of officialdom like a headless chicken...)

And yes, there are two darts at the elbows, I forgot to mention those...

Thanks Mary! Got to get the rest up this week...

Here's that label. I discovered the flash/automatic setting on my flatmate's camera (my old brick-like one has died) - yey, technological breakthrough. It does, however, nuke colours, so nothing on the button yet...

The blue 60s one? It seems to have a different slogan on the label, so perhaps shows this company survived through the 50s at least... Thanks for that, very interesting!
