date help with this top!

harriet, what an amazing top! I love it, its so unusual. Any tags? is it cotton? My first impression is that it's not 80's.

I know fashions vary a bit across the ocean, but I almost get a conservative 1940's feel from this one. Is it crocheted? Any labels?

I don't think this would have shown up here in the US in the 80's, though.

Can you tell if it's handmade or machine knit? It's lovely and very unique!!! I can't give you any info but someone who knit/crochets and collects vintage knitting patterns probably could!! I must say...it's items like this that I wish I could reach into the computer and touch...I'd LOVE to see how it feels!! Is it heavy/light? soft/firm? Airy/tight? thick? What are the buttons made of??

oooop...sorry that's more questions then answers!!

It looks to me to be either late 1930s or mid 1970s because of the puffy sleeves and the emphasis on the upper portion of the torso. Knitted/crocheted clothing was popular in both periods too, so its hard to tell from the photo. Is there an old snap closure at the back of the neck? Are the buttons a shiny celluloid or a dull plastic, or glass?

sorry all - posted and ran which is very bad form i know... i think it's later rather than earlier, although when i first picked it up i grabbed it as i thought it looked late 30's, but buttons are plastic and material is a wool or acrylic/wool blend. i think it's hand crocheted and knitted (combination of both) though, would have taken an age!
will go get some close ups. i'm glad i got some positive votes on this one, as i bought it for myself and i am sometimes a little worried about my taste :spin:

Oh Darn harriet, I was hoping you were going to sell it so I could buy it! Are you watching the new miss Marple by any chance? I think its about 1952 in the show and several of the women have dresses with the exact same sleeves. I thought of you as soon I saw them. I would not have guessed 1950's on your top but they certainly were wearing them them.

UPDATE:
So sorry harriet, the film is taking place in the 50's but it's in the flashbacks to the 30's that the dresses and tops with the sleeves are being shown.

don't worry, after jonathan's help and a close look at the buttons it shall be listed in 70's, with a 30's influence! wish i'd watched miss marple though -i love it!
i thought it was a more recent version of an earlier style but couldn't put my finger on when - as is so often the case. thanks everyone!! :)

I can't keep my mouth shut re: Miss Marple.... is it the new series with Geraldine McEwan (the actress who played Lucia in Mapp and Lucia in the 1980s)? Because if it is, the clothing is terribly inaccurate. The older series done with Joan Hickson were, I thought, the best ever done and I don't know why they remade them. The clothing used in the Hickson series was near flawless!
