This photo appeared in today's edition of the Honolulu Star Advertiser illustrating an article about "A Singular Life' - a new book about Pres. Barack Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham.

I disagree with the date given in the paper and am curious if most of you will agree with me - or not. From the paper: "A family photo shows Stanley Ann Dunham, seated at center, with grandmother Leona Payne, left; her mother, Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham, standing at right; and aunt Ruth McCurry on her front porch in Augusta, Kan., taken in ......."
 
I agree with Jonathan - in fact considering the age of the ladies, who I would not expect to be wearing the latest fashions, I would put it as 1950-1951, maybe as late as 1952.

Curious as to what date they said it was....?

I would guess 1955 based on the fact that she was born in 1942 and looks to be about 13 or so in this picture. She is the most up to date dressed with her flat Audrey Hepburn style shoes and mid 50s blouse and skirt. The others are older and (i'm assuming) dressed in older style clothing.. you know mom and grandma type stuff. So 1955 - 1958.
 
And can I just say I have 60s pictures with my mom, me, and my grandmother and she is dressed just like these older ladies. You'd be confused looking at the pictures because only I am dressed in current styles in the pics and I'm 4 in them so I don't really count.
 
I will be wishy-washy and go with 1953 to 1956. I've seen photos of my mom from slightly before and around the time I was born (1954) up through when my sister was born (1956), and other than the aunt's shoes, which look late 40s to me, she was dressed much like these ladies. Of course, her wardrobe could have been carried over for several years, but I think this is at least later than 1950.
 
Stanley Ann Dunham was born in November, 1942 and in the photo appears to be at least 13 so I had trouble with - late '40's - the date that was in the paper.

I think the picture was taken somewhere between 1954 - 1956 because of the hairstyles and the sleeveless dresses.
