I'd love any info about this pendant. Woman I got it from said she thinks it came from Italy, about early 1960s. It's goldtone and the stones are coral.

What do y'all thing about dating it, where it might be from?

Thanks!

We're having a Vintage Jewelry Workshop at the moment, and Linn has instructed us to look at the back, for it will provide clues. May we see the back of this please?

And please, feel free to join us in the Workshop. It's most informative, with plenty of sparkling eye candy!

I will check that link out immediately. Here's the back. Very plain. Not sure what clues it provides. Help, if anyone can! : )

ps - nice to see you here, Joules!

Sorry not to comment on this piece, earlier, but I don't know much about this type of jewelry. I think 1960 is correct in terms of dating it but it could be

Your pendant has classical elements as motifs - the shells and volutes and the urn or vase. The black material could be onyx - you said the the pink balls are coral balls. The silver faceted stones are called marcasites. They are probably glass marcasites

It is very nicely finished and you might want to loupe it or take it to a jeweler and see if it is gold rather than plated. (Although I am not aware of marcasites being used in fine jewelry.) The reason I am suggesting that it might be gold is that the back is really beautifully finished and shiny and doesn't look "plated."

But - as I said this is outside my sphere of knowledge.

Hey Joules! I think the black is a metal. It's a really thin layer but not painted on either. Confusing.

Hey Linn...thanks...I've been following your workshop thread in hopes of learning more and I have, just not about this kind of jewelry. ha ha But seriously...I will research "marcasites." And what would I look for with a loop to see whether this is gold or gold plate?

Thanks soooo much, both of you.

Cin -

Marcasites - the real ones are iron pyrate but most newer ones are imitation - made of glass. There is no way to tell if something is plated or "real" gold unless the plating is coming off and you can see the base metal under it.

You can either "test" it - with a test kit or take it to a reputable jeweler and ask them to do that. Some "bench" jewelers - people who make jewelry or do their own repairs can tell by "feeling" it.

I do not have a test kit but I do know a wonderful reputable jeweler who has verified and not that pieces were "real" or not. He also can tell metal by touching it. Not me.

Thanks, Linn. I will locate a jeweler then.

Oh, a few months back I posted a maltese cross here and you, I believe, thought it could be juliana. Well, I just got an email today that Mr. Delizza confirmed it as D&E. Nice, huh. Appreciate your help with that too!
