Dating a couple of ladies

:hiya: I have a couple of dresses that I'm really struggling to date. They both have no labels and might be made by the same person/establishment as they use the same make buttons & then cover them & same make of zip. The pic on the back of the blue dress isnt so good, but there is a big bow. The lady that I bought these from in the UK, said she got these probably from a flea market in USA years back when she collected vintage, but these may hv been new at the time but retro, but honestly I don't know (bought it through a friend of a friend so can't get exact answers). When I think I'm near to dating them, one or two things won't add up.

So any :help: wld be fab, I can give more details re zip and construction and buttons if needed.

Thanking u in anticipation!

Sarah :kiss2:

My first instinct says 80s but I am not sure wihtout more details..... They have a 40s feel /influence to them but the waist and especially the bow make me think newer.

what kind of zippers? metal? and location up back I assume? What are the fabrics or what do you htink they are? any labels in them at all (I know you said no maker but are the any kind at all?)

Thanks
Jennifer

There are absolutely no labels at all on either. There's a metal YKK zipper on the side of the blue dress and buttons up the back. The silver one also has buttons up the back and a very small plastic/nylon YKK zipper below the waist. Even tho there are buttonholes for the back buttons on the silver one, on the sleeves there is just loops and no buttonhole. The construction is as I've seen on older garments which is the strange thing ie bound hem on the blue one, rolled hem or double hem on the silver one and no overlocking to be seen. Oh and the buttons even though they are both covered in the same fabric have PRYM PATENTED underneath. As for fabrics, I'm sorry but I'm hopeless there...my friend used to work in a fashion house, so I'm gonna hv to meet up very soon and ask her for a crash course in fabrics!!!!

I am afraid I am going to have to bow out then lol the zippers confuse me :-) I was lookign at the pics and the whole ruffle neck and the sleeves just make me think 80s...

the bow on the blue one makes me think 80s as well,,,, but the cut of the blue one makes me think late 40s, so I am going to have to wait for the experts...... I still liek the blue one though and I could see later date on it....

I am exctied to see what the others say? touhg they could just be 80s repo,, I hate to be a spoiler,, the blue does look like polyester fininshed to look like silk. have you ever done a burn test before? that will tell you real quick, if its (or they) are poly then they are hands down 80s pieces

ok, I'll do a burn test..I looked burn tests up recently so I'll give it a go. Well u can c my confusion with the dresses now, everything conflicts and its not hard to confuse me lol! Think I'll go get me some matches..... ;)

I'd say definitely 80s.... The fabric looks to be woven polyester, especially on the 2nd one, which would not have been around in the 40s. The style on the first one does look more "old-fashioned" than the 2nd, but still appears to be 80s.

whoo hoo I'm getting better at this!! My first thought was 80's too - it's the fabrics and the styles that make me think 80s

Thanks for feedback, so verdict's out: Early 80's, not exactly vintage vintage, but what the hey...and yes, first one is very Princess Di. Thankyou again..I'll be back lol! :D

I think 80s are vintage vintage - maybe other people don't but I was a little kid in the 80s lol so I totaly think 80s are vintage - it's over 20 years ago - much like when I hear pearl jam on the classic rock station I think "really? oh yeah I guess so! hahaha
