Hello,

I believe this dress dates to the 1930s, but I am unsure.

It has hook and eye closures down the side.

The seams are pinked. There is no shoulder pads.

There are no labels.

It is 44" long and has a rolled hem.

The shoulder to waist is slightly short, it is 14.5"

any help dating this would be much appreciated!

There's nothing there that's saying 30's to me. I think it is early to mid 50's with that narrower skirt.

Thank you for your reply, but I am sure that this dress is pre 50s.

Also, I forgot to include that the sleeves have a little pouf at the shoulders.

I don't see it as that old , but then I'm not holding it in my hands either. My guess would be late 40's to mid 50's. The hook and eyes are interesting, but it could be the maker did not have access to a zipper for this project. Are those hook and eyes sewn on or set into the fabric?

Amber, just to let you know that hook & eye tape is sold ready made like that for sewing with. This is an older version which is set like eyelets are. Today's hook & eye tape has the findings sewn between two pieces of tape instead.

Hmm...interesting.

According to the family, the woman who owned this dress died in 1942. This was one of her favorite dresses and she handmade it. Her daughter remembers her wearing it "all the time."

I asked because I thought it was potentially earlier than later 30s, which is what is struck me as before the family commented on it's age.

you're welcome, it's normally sold for corset making now, I've never seen it used in a dress like that before.
