I have a purse with a brass frame, black velvet exterior and interior lining that looks like a heavy taffeta. The lining has stenciled on it:
M.B. Moehring
White Plains, NY
I first went on the assumption that M.B. Moehring was a department store in White Plains. However, after scouring the internet I found a William G. Moehring and Co. The company was an import company. Mr. Moehring had a daughter named Maria B. Moehring. I am now presuming that this was her purse and was monogrammed with her initials, name and town/city she lived in. I also found documents that show Mr. Moehring died in the late 1800s. I've not found any further information on Maria B. Moehring other than when her mother died and she was the executrix of her mother's estate.
So my quandry is exactly how old is this purse? I'll be the first to admit that the older items are not my area of expertise.
