Dating an armadillo purse

Hello all, I have a gorgeous armadillo purse I am trying to date for resale. The ones I have seen that look similar are dated anywhere between the 1940's and 1970's. It is fully lined in vinyl with a mirror on the underside of the lid. Red beaded eyes and a fully intact, woven strap. It is oxblood color all over. Any info is appreciated!

Hi there,

I believe this to be at the earliest, later 1960s but my guess is mid to late 70s and this is why. Bonnie Cashin designed handbags for Coach in the early 60s (1963) and it was she, who came up with the turnlock closure for handbags and some clothing items such as outerwear. So, you wouldn't have seen such a brass type closure on earlier bags, but this type closure of course has been a hall mark of Coach bags ever since and inspired its use on others handbags. I worked for Coach Leatherware in the late 80s to early 9os and so this post pulled me right in. Cute bag and looks like excellent shape.

I agree with Julia we had one of these bags at the Theatre Company I work at- but please do be careful where you sell/ship this if you were going too, as I think it is now a a protected species- and shipping internationally is likely to not be an option. :)

I was suspecting it was 60s-70s because of the chunky latch, too. I didn't know the history of this particular turnlock style closure, nor did I think about the shipping limitations--thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
