Dating an R & K Originals dress

Hi,

I know this dress is 60's, but do you think it's early or mid 60's? Also, I'm not sure of the fabric. It has a linen like feel, but without the major wrinkling.

Thank you!

Any more information? What sort of zipper does it have (metal, nylon or invisible), lining? Labels? Buttons?

This style was revitalised in the '90s and most of the ones I've seen date from the latter era, especially the longer ones like this one - so I shall reserve opinion until more information is available.

EDIT: just looked it up in the label resource - does it look like any of these?

if its 60's and it looks like linen but doesn't wrinkle, it most likely is polyester. there were some very fine polys made that were difficult to determine w/out a burn test.

do the seams have any extra allowance where you could slip out a thread or two to do a burn test?

Hi,

After seeing the clothing labels that Circa posted, I'm thinking I got the era wrong. The dress looks to be authentic and from the 50's. It has a metal zipper up the back, an acetate lining down the front (middle only) and has six black buttons on each side of the middle front. Someone has removed a small tag near the main one and there is an old dry cleaning tag with a heavy metal staple in it. The inside seams are unfinished and have that unraveled look in places. Here's a pic of the label:

I appreciate the responses, info and knowledge of the people on this site - thank you!

I would say early 60s on that. Make sure you show a closeup of the button detailing. It will separate this from the average little black dress.

Hi Julie,

I burned some fibers and they self-extinguished. Because the fabric is black, I couldn't tell about a char. It just smelled kinda hemp-ish to me.

Yes, the right accessories would really jazz it up!

The length of the dress made me think 60's.

The burn test doesn't cover blends very well. I think with your hemp smell and the self extinguishing, that's probably what you have, maybe a linen/cotton with some man-made thrown in.

This may be a cusper (50s into 60s), but I think it is
early 60s.

Very classic and chic.

I vote for 60s, and I'm going to digress slightly and say early to early/mid. I had an R & K with almost that exact shape/length, and it was mid 60s.... Also agree with Jenn that it's likely a blend, and I'm guessing linen/rayon or similar. The rayon would soften up the linen so it wouldn't wrinkle as much and would drape better.

That would be even cuter with a colorful scarf tied 'round the waist as a sash, or a chunky belt.
