Hello all....I have this 3 piece vintage set ....I picture Audrey Hepburn in this...so I am thinking 1950's??? Also, If you can tell from my pics, is this Matlasse'? Is there a certain name for the 2 piece kind of dress style this is?...It is very well constructed, there is a blue and white ILGWU label and a company torn up paperish tag that had numbers for the style etc...no RN or designer label, but the attention to details is very nice. Here are some pics...any help much appreciated.

I agree brocade.. unless the pattern is not created with the weave,, it appears so... and without the jacket i see 50s, but with i see more 60s...

so my best guess would be late 50s early 60s perhaps a cusper... but we will know for wure if you show which blue label it is.

there are two different ones.. i'll be right back with the examples :-)

I sure wish there were a designer label on this...so frustrating..LOL

JLUTHYE I know what you mean about looking 50's (audrey) without the jacket and Jackie O with the jacket

Bungalow...I have books with pieces of the fabrics and I am still lost:rolleyes::no:

I would call it a matlaissé. Seeing the Union label will help, but the AFL-CIO blue label started in 1955 and went to 1974 if my memory serves. I think it looks like late '50's or very early '60's and reminds me more of Jackie Kennedy than Audrey Hepburn. I absolutely love it. I'm afraid to ask you what size it is!!!!

OOPs - it will fit me. Did some label research and the label on the dress is 1963-1974 - so it's most likely '60's. Jenifer (Jluthye is correct that there were two blue labels.)

The easiest way to explain is that matlaissé is sort of "quilted" and it is definitely puffier.

Here's a definition I found online: Matelesse,Matalasse,A heavy upholstery-weight textile in Jacquard weave with two sets of warps and wefts. Surface appears puffy or cushioned.

I am not spelling it correctly except this is how I think I remember it is spelled - LOL. Brocade is also a type of jacquard weave. I am off to my (ancient) interior design book to check the spelling!

ok, I don't know if this will help, but I posted a Yves St Laurent set on here the other day...it is a little bit down on this first page of Q&A...I was told it was Matlaisse...this is like that...I still am confused and can't tell the difference...in my silk book the fabric swatch is thinner...this is a thicker material...I did a burn test and it smelled like paper and had a black soft ash...if any of that helps...:scratchchin:

lol and the burn test just tells you the fiber content.. were discussing the weave... Took me a while to figure all that out too haha

I htink you have a cotton blend.. but I will have look my notes up I don't remember the burn test results but paper and an ash mean natural fiber

According to my book it is spelled matelassé. It has two sets of warps and wefts and it's embossed pattern makes it appear quilted. Probably more than anyone wanted to know!

Just in case anyone is interested, here is the listing ...thanks for all your help!
