I am wondering if anyone can date this photo from the costume. I'm thinking the younger lady's clothes can' be earlier than 1920. Could they be pre 1912? (The old lady is my 2nd great grandmother, died 1926; the man is my great grandfather, died 1933, but his wife, my great grandmother, died in 1911) Thanks in advance

Hi LilyS. Yes, I think they can be earlier - around 1908-1910 I think. It's hard to see but it looks like both women wear the high stand up Edwardian collar and the skirts look like the long A line skirts worn around 1910.

This would be wonderful, thank you, as it would make the picture likely of my grea grandmother. I am attaching a higher contrast close up the necklines

See what others say, but the older woman also has a version of the Gibson girl hairstyle that was popular around the turn of the century while the young woman has a more modern style.

The open necked sweater makes me want to go later - more 1918-21ish. The older woman has an earlier hairstyle, but that's typical of older women...

I was thinking along the same lines as Jonathan, and now that he has chimed in I will agree that the sweater is what looked more post WWI. The older woman has a fabulous pin stripe suit that really looks as if it was made in 1912. Those broad striped walking suits were enormously popular in 1912, especially the ones with stripes going in opposite directions as are the stripes on her suit. Since she is older, she would probably still be wearing the styles of an earlier time.

The younger woman's hair looks vaguely European to me, so I cannot pinpoint the year from that, but it does look more WWI era than it does 1911.

It is a fabulous photo!

Does it look like the man wearing plus fours? If so, does this help date the photo?

The gentleman looks as though he is wearing long socks pulled up over trousers to me. It's hard to tell but there's something over the ribbed cuff of the socks - it looks either like he's wearing scottish kilt hose, with a ribbon on the inside leg, or perhaps sock garters,
