Dating: Edwardian(?) Dress

Hello,

This is my first piece of vintage/antique anything, I feel good about it being late Edwardian, possibly hand-made, but am not an expert by any means. As the dress and jacket are black I had slight issues with photgraphic quality. I hope these photos will do.

There are no photos of myself wearing it, (it is very sturdy), however it has a very long skirt, I am 5 feet 7 inches/1.70 meters and find it would require a short heel too be floor length on me. The sleeve of the jacket has a nice puff from the inside material, (unsure what it is, rough like a burlap sack, netted). The measurements o the gown are another confusing factor, the waist is rather loose on me, (my waist is 23 inches). The sleeve goes too my elbow. Along the back of the dress is a slit, this goes until the jacket stops. The slit is held closed at the back of the neck by a metal hook and eye. One the right waist there is a closing clasp, these are metal, one a hook and eye, the other a snap, (possibly replaced later on?). I believe the gown too be taffeta, but am not positive. The pattern of it reminds me of a wood.

Anything at all you can offer about this dress would be much appreciated and helpful too me!

Hello,

Without seeing it on a person, mannequin, or dress form, etc. it is difficult to determine the style and date. From what I can see, and your details, it appears to be mid to late 1930s to possibly early 1940s. It is not Edwardian. The fabric is moire, but of course I cannot know if it is rayon moire or silk moire. You can do a burn test on a snippet of fabric (an inner seam, etc) to determine if it is silk.

If you could take photos of the dress on a person it would be helpful for us.

It looks very lovely.

Hello Bilosnizhka and welcome to the forums.

Interesting set: it looks like a silk moire' taffeta to me. You can read more about moire here at the fabric resource.

As to the era and style, it's a little hard to see what's going on, especially with regards to the neckline - I can see a slit but is that just at the back or the front too? The jacket is clearer, as is some of the stitching. You can see that it's hand made, in particular with hand stitched button holes.

The style and construction (and also fabric) look late '30s to early '40s to me. Interesting buttons too.

Here it is on! Rather poor light again, my apologies.
