I'm assuming it's either from the 50s or 60s. No tags or labels. Not sure on the fabric. I'm hoping it's washable because it appears to have been splattered with mud or something. The hem was higher at one point. Thanks for your help!

I'd say 1950s, and I wouldn't wash it. It looks top be either a rayon or silk faille, and that won't like getting wet. You could have dye run or shrinkage. And those covered baubles may not do very well. This is a fabric that also gets tide rings from moisture, so that means no spot cleaning. If yo have a good dry-cleaner, that may be the way to go.

Let's see what the others say. They may have some ideas on cleaning.

Thank you! I will see about getting it dry cleaned. I'm also considering taking it up to where the hem was before to hide that line.

Try vacuuming it first with a brush attachment - that sometimes has remarkable results. You could then try a damp, and I mean BARELY damp towel which has ALL the moisture wrung out. You do not want to get the fabric wet at all, you just want to wipe the surface of the textile to remove any dirt. If the dirt is embedded in the textile it won't work. I would use a terrycloth washcloth and sometimes what works is if you take it out of the dryer before its fully dry. That slight dampness is what you need. I am not a fan of dry cleaning - and I agree with Hollis, don't wash it, you will ruin it.

I'll leave the fabric care advice to the experts above, but I did want to say that I have a commercially made dress by Carol Craig with a very similar but more extensive treatment/embellishments at the neck as well as down the wrap side, with crystal dangles instead of fabric at the neck. I agree that mine is '50's. Mine is in a rayon faille, I think, not as nice as yours. :) though mine has more bling--it came from a Vegas estate, and looks it.

Thank you! I will follow those directions carefully. I tried this dress on last night and it's wonderfully swishy.

I agree with the others on washing/getting it wet. I've tried on similar and found the embellishments/baubles leaked rust onto the dress once wet
