I have a cream Hardy Amies coat, but am unsure of the date. I thougth at first it may be late 60s as the buttons are made of a papier mache - would really appreciate some help with this one.
Yeah, the buttons look like white leather to me. The coat looks 1970ish to me. If it were after spring 1971 I would expect a sash belt and if before fall 1969 I would expect a less flared collar. Hardy Amies is pretty conservative, so I suspect he was in line with the mode.
I don't think I would trust your dry cleaner's opinion about papier mache buttons.
Thanks Jonathan for helping with the date of the coat. The buttons are somewhat confusing. I will get these verified by an expert, the drycleaner I used insisted that this is what they were made of, so I will do some more investigating.
I agree with '70s and leather buttons: in any case I recommend that you take them off before dry cleaning because you don't want to risk losing one: they're common on tweed jackets and coats (especially from the '50s and '60s) but expensive to replace and white ones are rare. They usually come in assorted shades of brown or black. It's a lovely coat.
