Dating help on another bag - Croc or alligator skin?

Hi everyone,

Can anyone help me date another bag? I think it's circa 50s, but also wondered if it could be 40s as the clip is a bit deco-ish, plus I believe exotics were often used during the war as they weren't rationed? Then I thought it's quite large and wondered if it could be early 60s!

It's about 10 inches across, and 3 inches deep. Suede interior with a metal zip, and pockets lined in maroon fabric. Studs on the bottom. No labels anywhere.

Also, can anyone tell me if it's croc or alligator, or how to tell? I've been researching, but can't seem to find a useful guide.

I think it's '50's but it could be a little earlier. I think it's alligator. I just read a little bit about the history of the Kelly bag which was actually introduced in the 1930's. It was called the Kelly Bag in 1956, when Princess Grace put one of her favorite Hermes bags in front of her stomach to hide her pregnancy.

Which color is more accurate? I'm seeing a more orangy color in the first photo and wine in the second. It's lovely.

Thanks Linn.

It's not that orangey, I need to adjust the pics. I just saw how orangey they've come out here! The second colour is truer, but it's really just warm brown.

Here's another that I've tried to make more true to colour.

It's a lovely bag, and looks 50s to me. The rings on the handles look more 50s than 40s, and wonderful, arty clasps were still common on bags in the 50s.... My own experience has been that I have found such clasps to be quite common on bags of all price ranges until probably the mid/late 50s (not exactly like yours, of course, but the "not run-of-the-mill" ones). I haven't found them so much in the 60s, except probably on really high-end pieces--which I don't any of....
