Dating help on gloves please.

I am totally out of my element on these gloves. I think they are very old, but how old I know not.

The hand part is ribbed and looks like it could be nylon, but it only stretches slightly horizontally, not vertically. The flared part is made of a brown canvas type fabric and the lace-like part is - for lack of a proper term - like slubbed gauze.

Is there a name for this type of glove and how old might they be?

THANKS!

They are a gauntlet glove and I am guessing 1930s when there was a fashion for this style and browns and cinnamons were fashionable colors. But the gauntlet stayed in fashion into the early 50s at least, so they could be 40s when those colors were still in. Is the hand silk jersey? The cuff looks like pleated organdy from the photos.

They are not 20s or before.

Thanks Hollis and Lizzie!

I'll check my "All About Silk" book and see if I can find a sample of silk jersey and the organdy - organdy sounds right and part of it is pleated and there is an overall criss-cross pattern with random slubs.

I'll take a better pic, too - mine are really fuzzy, Lizzie. And it could be nylon.

Hi Deborah
My experience in selling these is that not only do these appeal to vintage fashionistas but gauntlet style gloves also have a fetish following. Thought you might like to know.

LOL Deborah...If I were the posting these the description might (NOT) go something like..He looked at her expectantly her. She squinted her eyes and one by one pulled her fingers from her gloves...laying down the gauntlet...He had been a bad boy...but then my imagination is always on overload anyway-Lorinda

:hysterical: Lorinda, I love it!

Thanks, Mary Jane! I have a repair to do; so they won't be up for a bit - I just couldn't wait to find out when then were from as I've never had a pair like them before. There's no felt, MJ - could you be referring to the canvas?

As I look at these more they don't look like they are very refined and it has me thinking maybe they are an early utility glove...crazy? The organdy looks very rough. Perhaps they were intended for gardening...I know I am thinking outside the box here but the gauntlet style gloves that I have sold in the past sometimes had really pronounced large flares to the cuff or elaborate embellishments with buttons or soutache etc. that extended off the outside of the arm not on the inside like these are showing. That inside of the arm "gauntlet is really throwing me...no punn intended.

Im not at home right now but I will take better pics and post by Monday. You re right when you say they are not very refined - at keast not the trim. The hand part thou is delicate and not what I would think someone would garden in - but ya never know.

Im using a french keyboard and I cant find the apostrophe!

Deborah
As I said I was thinking "outside the box". I just wondering why the extension of the cuff ie gauntlet was on the inside of the wrist not on the outside where it usually is...Maybe they were a type of glove not used outdoors but inside for a specific type of special indoor work...like handling a rich dowagers jewels or something like that...just joking..but I think you see what I mean.

thanks, Lorinda - I like that - handling a rich dowagers jewels - not only like it, wouldn't mind having to do it!

Could not find a sample of silk jersey. But the explanation on silk jersey fits the stretch factor of these, but I'm uncertain when it says flat ribs - does that mean you can't feel them, only see them? I can feel the ribs on these. If it's nylon, the lack of stretch has me confused.

Here's some close ups (it took a few trys to keep my hand steady, the hand being photographed that is)...
