Dating/identifying croc handbag

Hi all,

I have this yummy little handbag, and am wondering whether it's real crocodile. The 'scales' do appear to have pores as indicated in the Fur Resource, but I've never closely examined a real croc example so I'm not sure.
I've attached a close up of one of it's small scrubs if that helps with texture!

It has a matching beveled edge mirror, and part of it's internal purse is lined with soft kid leather, so I would say it is of high quality. Would anyone like to throw a datestimate at me? :)

That's faux, the pores would only be one per scale, not lots of tiny ones like you have.
I'm not even sure it's real leather, due to the crinkling between the 'scales' and on the close up you have some loss of the shiny layer, I associate this with man made material where the gloss gets sticky with age and when touched with something else, it comes off.
I would think it's mid 60's, and I've not seen a bag with such a jumbo effect before - fun! but I don't know the scale of the bag.

I agree that it's probably faux, as Melanie says that crinkling looks plasticky to me.

I think it's much earlier though. I've never seen those built in inner double coin purses later than 1950s, and tend to assume they are 40s.

oh that's a good point Ruth, I missed that, though real exotic skins were more commonly used in the 40's, to fulfil the lack of leather.
I'm only going on my knowledge of materials used in shoes here :BAGUSE: it's the late 60's when a lot of man made materials were in, and I have a few pairs of moc croc courts/pumps from then.

Hi ladies,

I'm pretty sure it isn't a man made outer, the small areas of wear are rubs to the surface (where it's repeatedly caught against a leg etc.) rather than vinyly/plasticy disintegration, like scuffs on leather. There are teeny areas of flaking at seams where just a touch of the back is visible, and it does appear to be skin of some kind, certainly not a synthetic backing.
Similar to what you're saying Ruth, I wouldn't expect it to be faux given the high quality interior and beveled mirror.. But yes, would be good to get some more views also!
