I can't find anything on the Maqueen shop or Mick Smalley hatters unfortunately so my dating is entirely guesswork at the moment, I was thinking 50's based on the paper label & inside details. Can anybody shed light on either of these names or a better dating?

What a fabulous color on that hat! I agree with 50s--on the earlier side, I'd think...

It's almost impossible to do any kind of search for "Macqueen" without coming up with results for Alexander McQueen, but I did turn up a NY times article in London which started at "Macqueen's hat manufactory":

GREAT FIRE IN LONDON.; A Number of Buildings in the City Gutted ...

It began in macqueen's hat manufactory, and quickly spread to the opposite side of the street, the wind fanning the flames, and the burning' embers falling in all ...

And there seems to be a Smalley's menswear shop in Nottingham at present:

Maybe you can contact them directly for more info?

Yes that was my problem searching too, and I was pretty sure of no connection between them. Great find on the shop, I'll try ringing them tomorrow and see if any of the older employees are still there...

Hi,

While I am not all that well versed in the history of men's London hatters, this does have an early 1950's look to it. How wide is the brim in front, how tall is the crown in front, and is the brim edged with ribbon? Is the inner logo/seal covered in plastic? These give clues.....also the thinner ribbon hatband went out of style in the later 1950's, so that may help date it also.

It is a really stylish hat. It is not a trilby, it looks to be a snap brim fedora with a teardrop crown.

Sorry Babara as soon as I posted it I thought trilby wasn't right but I hadn't worked out I can now change titles :duh2:. It does also look a whole lot better with the traditional half up half down brim... which looks relatively wide compared to the overall size of the hat to me, the brim measures 2 3/4" at the front, the crown is 4" at the front and the brim is edged with matching grosgrain ribbon which is 1" wide same as the crown's band. The inner logo is covered in plastic, hence the very yellow appearance.
