Dating of These Pins

Thought these might all be similar in dating so put them up together. They are all quite small - all less than 2" x 2". I am a little lost on dating - art deco? Any ideas on what they might be made of?

No marks or stamps anywhere that I can see.

Thanks again - I feel like I need to find new words to say thank you. Will get out my thesaurus!!

They look early - not sure what the material is - the one on the bottom right looks like celulose acetate but the center sort of looks like mother of pearl. The one on the bottom left is not a pin - maybe a scarf or tie holder??? The cameo portion might be Bakelite. No idea about the other two - they look like plastic. It's really hard to tell without handling and testing them.

It is hard to see in pic but it actually is a pin. It opens up like others just blends in bc of poor picture taking. Thanks for chiming in linn...I appreciate!

I suspect the top left one was a '30s buckle that has been converted into a brooch by glueing the pin onto the back. If you look closely there might be signs of a (removed) clasp in the middle. The bottom left looks like it also might have been a '30s buckle at some point.

The bottom right flower looks like it might be all mother of pearl or lucite - but it's hard to tell from the photos. Do you have any close ups? What does the top right one feel like? It reminds me of piece of lino, but that seems very unlikely. It also looks '30s to me. Not sure on the flower date, and wobbly on the cameo pin too.

I agree that the brown and the cameo pieces look like buckles that have been converted. The flower pin also looks like it might have something else, may a button, before the pinback was added at a later date. I might be wrong, but why else was the pin back added, asymmetrically, over the metal circle on the back? Could the metal circle underneath have been part of a button shank?

I am going to go back and look at these more closely - everything you are saying makes a lot of sense. I am betting you are right about all 3 of them. They are kind of sloppy.

Though the upper left and lower right do look to have been converted from other pieces, as others have suggested, I believe the lower left cameo pin may be in its original state.

I had pretty much the same one, different color, a couple of years ago, which didn't test as Bakelite (I sold it as celluloid):

You'll need to inspect all the pieces closely for evidence of alteration (ie offcenter pinbacks, glue residue, etc), but this one and the green Deco square both appear original to me (as far as your pics show!)

On date--early 30s?

Also, you can use white vinegar (or something containing it, like mayo or ketchup) to get the green corrosion off the pinbacks. Apply, wait a minute or two, and wipe off.
