Dating Ralph Lauren Jeans

Those are fabulous. Hard to say from when because his items were made in US until recently.

They do seem 80s, could be 90s, but I do believe they are definitely vintage... and uber cool too

This link below is interesting. Personally, I find the images on the jeans to be a bit objectionable, and my first reaction was surprise that Lauren would go this far in marketing a culture for money. Not the first time for him. I admit that I sort of feel uncomfortable looking at some those images on a pair of jeans, in particular the Little Big Horn Tour Guide and the Crow Squaw. I am happy to see it is not just me who feels this way........

To each his own, I suppose. Nothing against anyone who would wear these, just a comment on Ralph and his philosophy.

I think political correctness has gotten to the point of absurdity.

Also, "Artists" have been appropriating from the past since the beginning of time. Egyptian revival offensive? What about every other year some designer bastardizing Japanese culture? I am slways floored that some people feel a kimono is a robe. How about all those "Asian" inspired designs?

Here's the definition of political correctness:
"the avoidance of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against."

I don't think it's unreasonable for people with power to consider the effect of their actions on those who have less power. For a successful fashion label like Ralph Lauren to use images like this, it is offensive to some people, especially the cultures they portray. These sorts of things were more acceptable in the past but thankfully attitudes are starting to shift.

It's a common issue in the vintage world and affects many products. Good examples are furs, which used to be signs of status and wealth but we now know about the cruel practices of the trade and wearing the pelts can attract unfavourable attention in some places.

It's up to the individual whether they're happy with this or not.

without the political commentary, the print is obviously an homage to a western past, long gone. History may at times be offensive, but it still remains our history.

I also do not believe that this is the place for social commentary, but the behavior you describe of your (locals) is the behavior of a long repressed, mistreated and uneducated society. You will see this same behavior in ghettos around the world. When one is driven down for so long, and excluded from all that is bright or the possibility of attaining things they see other have it creates a false idolatry of those items and belief that having such things makes you a better person with "status" It is EXTREMELY short sighted to blame those behaviors in those this country has for so vry long mistreeated and repressed. They are completely the societal outcome of what WE not THEY created.

Linda, I think your pants might be early '90s. The cut is better for then and they're similar to some silk Kookai jeans I had in '92. Especially with the custom buttons for the fly.

If you could please post photos of the label when you have them, it would be helpful.

UPDATE: the VFG Label Resource has the RL jeans release in 1996, so I think they have to be from then or more recently. I looked up the original ebay listing and the seller said they were '70s-80s. I very much doubt that.
