Dating sheer black dress

It's made of some kind of bumpy sheer material. It has two pockets. I've never seen a button down dress button so far down into the hem. The hem is a 3-4 inches. It had a tag but it's missing. You can still see some of it though the back of the neck. It must have had a belt at some point but that's also missing.

The dress was originally longer. Someone made the hem wider , either because they were shorter or because they wanted the dress to look more modern.

Agree with the others: early '50s nylon plisse' shirtwaister dress that has been shortened. Very nice. The buttons are probably a replacement, as they aren't the sort that comes with this style of dress.
