dating this pretty dress

Hi- I wasn't sure if this was vintage or repro but when I steamed it, it smelled old

the closures are snaps up one side

can you guys help me with dating it? and I would also be forever grateful for what KIND of dress this even is!

1938 - 1941 would be my guess. Snap closure, that colour palette, highish waist, and the hem trim are all typical of then.

I agree with Jonathan on the late 30s or early 40s. It may well have had a matching bolero.
What is actually going on at the bottom with the striped trim? I feel that trimming may have been added at the top and at the bottom.

I was thinking the same about the trim. I agree with the late 30s - early 40s dating. But the trim looks as if it may have been added. The hot pink color was starting to be seen then, but that strip of hot pink just looks a little bit too "hot" to me, and I do not see the exact hue of pink in the pattern of the dress.

interesting! the ribbon trim in both spots is def crudely sewn as compared to the stitching of the dress. I'm thinking maybe I ought to remove it! thanks for the help
