Dating Vintage Purses

I have always thought these were all 1920s/1930s just from various samples on the MET museum site, costuming on period shows, and general illustrations... but any additional dating advice would be greatly appreciated, especially for the crochet purses with tassels!

Great photos! May I ask what lighting set up you use? They're so clear and bright! I especially love the last two.

I generally date these on materials and construction as some of the styles are reproduced at other times, but on the current information I'd put all as '20s except for the two beaded purses, which I'd put as '30s.

Gosh, what wonderful purses, that 3rd one is divine!
I am not a purse expect-but apart from the beaded purse, they look 20s-30s to me, but more of the team that are experts will be in touch I am sure.
Like Nicole said, fabulous lighting !

Thank you Nicole! Your expertise constantly impresses and humbles me!

I use all natural lighting for my photography. I am opening up a retail shop in downtown Long Beach and there are 2 walls of floor to ceiling windows :) (which explains the inconsistency of the background being lighter-darker than others)

Carrie - The purse with turquoise stones is made of silk!

Natural light! Oh, my - I'm impressed. We have good natural light here in Australia but my shop is not so sunny. It has to be that way because the fabrics would fade but on some days it's good - here's a shot we took recently. If the light was this good every day we'd be set.

Thank you for your kind words - I'm constantly learning about vintage. I love it! There are many here at the VFG who know a lot more about handbags than I do.

Nicole - I do use a paper backdrop (since my current walls have awful 90s texture) which really helps make photos much clearer. If you have any photography questions I'll do my best to help you out!

What lovely examples and your shots are super!

I would agree with 30s on the beaded ones...the lovely one with the tassel looks older to me, teens or early 20s.

I have had a lot of pin cushions like the crochet one you are showing in the 2nd to last photo, I always thought they were from the 2os or 30s as well.

The 1st one looks like it may be a little newer than the rest.

The last one is adorable the crochet or is it knit work makes it look like an imitation of straw, that looks like it may be a little older.
