Dating Vintage Shoes by Markings

Can anyone tell me when shoe sizes were written on the shoes by hand rather than stamped on them? Is it a reliable way to date vintage shoes? Thanks.

I think widespread use dies out in the early 1960's but it is still common on custom and handmade shoes after this. I wouldn't use it exclusively for dating.
