Hi, I'm new here but I need your help! I have recently come upon a DeadStock Shaheen circle skirt from the 1950s, and although I don't want to list it for sale, I must. I have not listed it as of yet because I have no idea how much to sell it for... I have never seen a 50s deadstock Shaheen anything so I was wondering if any of you can give me an estimate. Here are some photos:

Thanks,

This should sell well for you. I think your best bet is to put it on ebay, 10 day listing up for auction with a decently low start bid, pay to feature it (the lower start the less to feature it too) and blog blog blog, drive traffic to it. make sure your listing ends on a weekday And right around the end of the work day..... They do best for me. Saturday closings seem to get watchers but not bids. I think people are out and about and forget. But weekdays they sit at work and bid lol.

Thats my personal opinion on the skirt.... I am curious to see what others say. As far as value, I know they are collectable but also you have to look at who wants it. I have no idea of a number for you though. Now you can put it on a store web site but then you will have to sit and wait for a buyer. If you need to sell it some what soon then auction is the way to go, but if you have time then I suppose a set price would be beneficial.

Hope that makes sense :-) and was helpful!

I see 200-300 for the 50s dresses on ebay as buy it nows, all in good conditon, but not just skirts but also not deadstock either.

I think you should send it to me for really close evaluation!!! Once I have enjoyed (oops - examined it) I will let you know.

Seriously, I have no idea but what a great find! Please let me know when you list it.

Aloha,

Linn

Haha. I know its such a great find and its a sin what I got it for. I know how much the dresses usually cost but I have never seen any quite like this. I plan to be listing it on ebay within the next week or two but just not sure how much I should be listing at/reserve. I'll be listing under vintage clothing and hawaiian apparel. Its truly a collectors piece...

thanks all for the info so far

Shaheen Skirt

Wow! You have really come across a rarity! I agree that you should put it on eBay with a relatively low starting price. I personally advise against reserves as it is proven through research that they deter sales. When buyers see "reserve not met" they assume that you want a mint for it. Even if you DO want a mint for it, start low without reserve as you will suck more buyers into your auction with the excitement of "maybe I could win that Shaheen skirt"!! If they bid early they will become invested in it and are likely bid higher than they planned to. This will also create more competition between bidder and drive the final price up. I also agree on the 10 day listing, however I have most success with listings ending on Sunday nights.

I also wanted to mention that although Shaheen dresses go for a good price, skirts of any kind are not usually as popular as dresses. However, with that tag attached, who knows what's possible. I see you definitely getting over $100 for it though. It is GORGEOUS!! Good Luck!!:cheer:

I havent thought about sunday night listings.... I know late friday and all my saturday listings have not gone well.....

But never tried Sunday.. maybe I will :-) Thank you for that tip.. everyones at ome getting ready for work week i guess lol

Stunning skirt - a skirt itself is rare, but new with tags is just amazing!

If it was mine and I wanted to use Ebay and wanted a quick sale I would try a seven day BIN. Also be sure to post it on the VCA board's Eye Candy Wednesday for maximum exposure.

$100.00 is not enough for the skirt - the Shaheen full skirted dresses without tags can sell in the 250.00 plus range, I would list the skirt for 250.00 and consider offers and see what happens.

If you haven't already done this, you can look at the Shaheen website for a brief history of the Shaheen company to put in your listing. Off the top of my head, I believe the Sand and Surf is an early line.

If it didn't sell then I would try the auction suggestions above - but I would NEVER list anything this nice without a reserve the way things are on Ebay these days. Considering the red hot popularity of the Shaheen Hawaiian garments I don't think a reserve would deter anyone from bidding.

AMEN.

I would agree with Catseye and Mary Alice. In this rare case, I would add a reserve.

I would go one further. Don't just list this one. Before you list, get together a boatload of things or carefully selected things that would be good accessories or tops/shoes for this, and put a couple of other premium things up or things a buyer of a shaheen might want too, or a collector. If you feature this - it is going to draw attention. Even if the person looking has no means to buy it, they will probably look at what else you have and buy something else, or you could have an add on sale. I wouldn't put a reserve on the other stuff that you are listing, and stagger the listings so some end a day before or a little after - you never know someone could get their "you didn't win" email and will go to look at what the listing brought and snap up something else. At least, that is what I have found. Think about it as purchasing advertising for your shop/listings rather than just thinking narrowly how it is going to affect this one item.

For me, I don't know what fees are, but either starting at $9.99 with a reserve, or starting at $500 with a best offer feature will both attract a boatload of attention from people, I think. With best offer, I think people can see how many offers there are and it will motivate people to come in with their highest and best. Maybe i am crazy though. I don't know how much fees are these days...but if you bought it for a song and have a boatload of other nice things for people to buy and look at, it may very well be worth it.

Thanks all for the info/advice.... I've been really weary of listing it without a reserve mostly because I recently listed some really nice 50s items but most of what I listed didn't sell... I do need to take better pics of the skirt and dress it up like ya'll mentioned, it would be nice to list similar items but I believe I only have one more Shaheen tea timer, I just sold a Pake Muu Muu, and well I don't think I would ever part with my Kamehameha dress and swim suit only because they are really hard to find sizes... most of what I have to sell next is 50s mexican all rare items that you don't see often so lets hope they sell too :bouncy:

It doesn't matter if there are more shaheens at the same time - I mean, list some cool purses or accessories or other stuff. I would put the mexican stuff up at the same time. Maybe not all ending at the same time, but so some get some face time if you have it featured.

Maybe you are not selling the items because not enough people are finding them - the keywords are important, but promoting is important too. You can't always list it and see what happens. If you have a newsletter, use it.
