Deco Paris Beauty Bittin\' the Dust. Ideas or Cry w/Me!

I was so thrilled when she pulled this dress out of a bag of clothes to sell to me that I foolishly rushed into a purchase without checking the condition. I paid a good bit for it considering it was a slow summer month and I had no $ to put into stock. So within a week I tried it on & the sleeve started to shred on me! Dry-rot. The label is ½ rotted out only saying “Paris.” It is silk. I’ve dated it with the 70 something year old daughter’s (of the owner) help to late 20's-very early 30's.
Should I just keep it on a padded hanger for display in the store or frame some of the needle work? Other ideas to Enjoy it a bit longer?

KK, it's beautiful; I can see why you would have jumped at it without necessarily taking the time to fully assess it! I would keep it intact for a store display, or put it for sale as a study or pattern piece. For display, instead of just keeping it on a hanger, do you have enough wall space anywhere to (gently) make it a wall hanging--keeping it intact, but perhaps hand tacking it to a large fabric background (vintage fabric, ideally), then arranging it "artfully" on the background, maybe with some accessories (fans, gloves....).

Just a thought....

Anne, I love the gently tacking it to fabric idea! I have a room with 18 foot celings that is just for display items, The sad thing is It's gas heat, summer & winter are roasting way up there! But if I use your idea, Customers may enjoy it a few more seasons! Thank You!!
Still open for more ideas!

It's beautiful and I can totally understand your enthusiastic rush to buy it before checking the condition. (Been there. Done that. Far too many times!)

Have you considered selling it online as a study piece?

Cowgirl, It's not the money I want back(unless you are giving it). I love telling folks who come in the Attic that it is not a 70's hippie dress, but deco-20/30 They freak out & I Love it!
I also love the museum of vintage clothing I have, but! This Baby won't last long with my heat/cool system. Hang & Enjoy till the end? Then Salvage the pieces & frame?
ps, How Are you? How is Austin?

KK, I see this sort of thing all the time as most of the stock that comes my way has had a hard life and I say "sell it as is, for a study piece". Any display is going to gradually damage it and if you sell now you'll get the best price. But don't let anyone try it on!

Nicole, when I went to hang it back on the display wall today, it looked much worse than yesterday! It surely will not last as a looky-loo item. Guess I'll let her find a new home:( On a happy note, the lady sold me a white cotton one just like it stitched in the Ukraine along with the matching childs dress from Hungary in Fabulous condition! :drinking2:
