Description Help Black Felt Dress Collar Type?

Hello All... it's been quite a long time.

This black felt dress, has tabs on the collar, that I believe are for attaching a top collar. I have researched and researched, but I am still struggling for terminology. Please help describe the dress style, the collar and then the slots where the top collar would attach.

Would you call this a Puritan collar? What would you call those tabs on the collar that I believe are there so that a collar can be attached on top? Do you think it was a white collar, or maybe fur? I just need help with the terminology so that I can describe it when posted for sale in a way that makes sense please.

Thanks

My initial reaction was a pilgrim collar.
Is the notched tab only on one side? I have had dresses and jackets in the past that have had this with nothing attached to it, so I don't know
if yours is meant to have something or not.

Let's see what others have to say.

It's a very nice 50s winter dress.

Ok Pilgrim not Puritan, thanks. I always mix them up. I thought Pilgrim at first.

The holes don't go through, but there is an opening as if to fit a button or something, so it doesn't appear they would do that for purely decorative reasons. Maybe it was detachable fur or a white collar? I really have no idea.

Yes, its a great 50s dress and a larger size too. I do not usually carry much 50s stuff, but fell into 2 really nice stashes by accident the other week. Couldn't pass them up.

Thanks again. Will wait to see the others thoughts too.

I agree with Mary Jane. Those tabs look decorative. I've had suits with that tab decor. However, I can't be sure either. Maybe my suits were supposed to have something go through them? It is lovely!

It's not crepe it's def felt, but it does look like crepe in the pics. Its a thin felt, but felt non the less.

It doesn't button all of the way down either. Does that keep it form being a coat dress?

What might you have to say about those details on the collar? How should I describe it please?

I can't see the dress very well in the photos but are you sure it's not a woven fabric? The close up seems to have warp and weft threads. I bow to your opinion though as I really can't see. For example, I couldn't tell that the buttons don't go all the way down. In that case you're right, it's not a coat dress.

My first thought on the collar button holes was that they were for a scarf or ribbon, but if they don't go all the way through you could be right about them being for buttons on a collar. Any sign of cuffs being attached to the sleeves? Perhaps there was a removable white collar and cuffs.

There is no stretch to it, but yes you can almost see a bit of a weave. . It really looks almost like felt close up but yes I can see the weave a bit, its almost fuzzy though, like flannel.

The wool crepe dresses I have had were always a bit stretchy. But hey you may be right. Ill get some better shots of it tomorrow.

The sleeves show no sign of a place to add cuffs. Here it is extremely lightened up, so that you may better see the buttons

But the tabs are actually like little pockets, they open for a button or something to fit into. You may be right, I have no clue whatthey are for, but it seems a lot effort to make them usuable just for decoration

After researching like the maniac I am, I am pretty sure this is melton wool. aka Melton cloth is traditionally made of wool and is woven in a twill form. It is thick, due to having been well fulled, which gives it a felt-like smooth surface.

It is very much like a much thinner version of what you find on a peacoat. Kind of bizarre huh? Maybe it was some sort of uniform?

I don't think this is it but I purchased this Lilli Ann late '40's - early '50's jacket a number of years ago that has a convertible shawl collar that could be worn in different ways. As you can see there is a hook and I think there might be snaps - I'll have to pull it out I don't remember.

These photos are lightened to show the detail. Perhaps your dress had a way to either attach an over collar as you thought or turn up some way ????

This is my jacket:

Yes I think so. The button hole slots on the collar appear to have been put there for a use. But, its still cute without whatever that might have been. Kinda a crazy with all of the years of vintage knowledge here, that no one knows. I seem to always find bizarre items no one has seen or knows about before. hahaha

Thank you all for all of the help. I posted it as is and we will see how it goes.

Still get confused over Pilgrim collars and Puritan collars and which is which.
