Did I do the right thing? I cancelled a bid

Hey everyone,

*sigh*
So I come in this morning to see that the genuined reptile heels had met my reserve. I was SUPER happy.
Of course, the highest bidder had a total feedback of -1.
And my TOS states, "10 feedback or less" contact me. I sent the bidder an email, she promptly got back to me, explaining that:

Dear damedelux, Hello Jw, I completely understand your concern. Let me explain the neg situation. I was in the process of purchasing a marc jacobs jacket, and the seller was gauranteeing the authenticity of the item.(Even though listed as one). Some of her neg feeback was re: quality and also authenticity of items. Also she did not respond to the last email and I felt very uncomfortable sending money to someone who couldn't guarantee her product as it was listed. I am new to ebay therefore I do not have any other history. I am regretful of the situation, however I felt there was no other option. I am very serious and do intend to follow through w/payment. I do have history w/paypal just not through ebay. I really do love these and hope we can have a smooth transaction. If I do win they will be loved greatly!

I replied that I understood, but then I got a few emails from other bidders stating that they thought something funny was going on! Ack!
So, to be fair, I ended up cancelling the bid, and now I'm second guessing myself.....
Did I screw up royally?

:barf:
(that's me, making myself sick over the whole thing)

OMG
I really think I made a huge mistake!
Goddddddd why did I cancel it? Why did I let myself be influenced by other bidders?
:puzzled:

I don't understand - what "funny" thing did the bidders think was going on? That you were shilling?

I probably wouldn't have cancelled the bid based on the story you've related, and I probably would be annoyed/disappointed if I were the bidder, since everything seemed to be okay through the e-mails. Have you e-mailed her again to explain why you cancelled the bid?

Laura

Hi Laura,

Yes I emailed her to explain how sorry I was to cancel the bid etcetera. I honestly didn't want to, but whenever anyone starts throwing around the whole, "hey I think there's something funny going on", then I get weirded out. I think she was trying to insinuate that I some weird eBay id was pumping up the price or whatnot. The eBayer who emailed me had TONS of feedback and said that this was exactly the sort of stuff that influenced her bids.

Well, don't worry about it now. It is too easy to second guess yourself and there is a lot of fraud and bad faith business on Ebay right now. It sounds as if this bidder read your TOS about emailing first and decided to ignore it so who knows.

I would be curious though as to the other bidders information as that is auction interference.

Kelly

Thanks Kelly,

I just feel bad, ya know? And I didn't want people to think anything fishy was going on, like you said, there's so much fraud & bad business on eBay.
What do you mean by the other bidders information?

What that other bidder did is called auction interference and ebay doesn't look to kindly on that sort of thing.

I hate to say this but I think that maybe the bidder who notified you may have been hoping you would cancel the bid on your -1 bidder so she could go in there and bid at a lower price.

It sounds like your -1 bidder had a legit reason for that -1 and may have been sincere in her bidding. But its too late now and I wouldn't worry about it.

But if you ever do hear from that second person that emailed you doing this sort of thing again. I would report her ( she may just see that you did cancel the bid and think she can get away with that sort of thing)

Well, I hate to break the news to you but I think your -1 bidder was probably telling the truth. I looked at the history of the seller that gave her the neg feedback and they are NARU'd and have lots of bad feedback.

Do you feel like kissing the bidder's butt to get your nice high bid back???????

Well, look at it this way Vix. It's a good learning experience. We all go through them. Here's your lesson learned, I always look at the feedback of the person GIVING the negative as well as the person receiving the negative. You can generally draw your own conclusions from there.

Don't feel bad. Feel good that you got an eBay lesson learned and over with early in your career as an eBay seller!! And who knows, you may still get your reserve price back!! Looks like you have lots of interest in those shoes!!

Good luck Sharonne!!

:kiss2: Maureen

I think everyone has given good advice - ditto from me.

Was there something in the -1 bidder's bidding pattern that would make the other bidder suspect you were shilling? Personally, I would have been pretty offended by the insinuation and would have had to slap my hands to keep from telling her so.

I hate to say this but I think that maybe the bidder who notified you may have been hoping you would cancel the bid on your -1 bidder so she could go in there and bid at a lower price.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking.

Hi everyone!

Thank you SO much for all the inpute, I really appreciate it :) Anyhoo, I cancelled her bid & then added to the auction that if someone had a legit reason for low/neg feedback, I would allow them to bid. I sent her an email apologizing, but explaining my reason etcetera etcetera. I asked that if she still was interested in bidding (though I COMPLETELY understood if she wasn't), all she had to do was send through a "question" explaining the situation. SO, it's all worked out and she's bid again :)
Plus, I have to agree with what everyone else has said, I really think the other person was just trying to get those shoes at a low price.
Again, thanks for all the input, thank god it worked out in the end!!!

:)
Sharonne

(ps. Guess who emailed me and said, "hmph, looks like the -1 bidder still can't follow your rules, she re-bid! I think it's time I sent her a very friendly email, don't you ;) )

hmph, looks like the -1 bidder still can't follow your rules, she re-bid! I think it's time I sent her a very friendly email, don't you

Don't email her ignore her. If she insists on emailing you further I would report her for her auction interference

All great advice here, and it looks like your -1 bidder is pretty understanding if she has resubmitted her bid.

Alls well that ends well!

Sue

You're right alonesolo, I'm ignoring her from now on. Not to sound elitist, but honestly, if you have to do all this unethical meddling to afford a pair of heels, maybe they're simply out of your price range ;)
Thanks Sue!

Everyone is going to have someone email them with more info, etc, but I don't think a polite dismissing will satisfy them...they just want those shoes.

I am sorry you had to go through this! It is always a learning experience. I have learned that while you want to put customers first and provide superior service, there is a point where you have to draw the line so that your service has value to others, you are a team with the customer, and the hours you set for work, your payment timeframes, etc mean something.

I think that if the -1 FB bidder wins (or perhaps even if they do not), you will have a speedy payment and a very good bet that they will become a loyal repeat customer, and I think the person who emailed you to complain when you do not cancel the -1 FB bidder a second time will learn that you won't allow yourself to be pushed around.

congratulations on the current price, by the way!

Chris

Hi Chris,

I swear, this has NEVER happened to me before! I've never had someone be so shameless about it! It's so hard for me to bite my tongue too. The last response I gave her was stern & polite. I pretty much pasted eBay's policy on bid cancellations, confirmed that nothing funny was going on & wished her luck, there was nothing else I would do about the situation.
At this point Chris, I hope -1 wins, so I can leave her good feedback. Maybe then the other bidder will learn, "greedy greedy never gets" ;)

I swear, this has NEVER happened to me before!]

I believe it. everyone will have an odd ASQ at least once in their career. That's why i like also selling off a site or in a shop. The only competition is who sees it and buys it first.
